Pretty wild!

But not necessarily for the tin foil hat crowd. :fing28: After all, thousands of people witnessed the event, didn't comprehend it, and so it faded into the obscurity of history.
Fascinating story, the first sighting of Foo-Fighters.

I've seen that web page before when I was looking for something else. All I can conclude is that whatever was seen was verified by more than one military spotter or the command to fire wouldn't have been given as they knew the schrapnel from those AA rounds comes down again and has to land on something, somewhere. I feel they were pretty certain of their sighting or they wouldn't have launched tons of metal into the air over a peaceful city.[huh]

Could be, but February 1942 was a pretty jittery time. The Japs had just pulled off a carrier-based air raid on Darwin, Australia and sunk 12 ships. Correigedor was under siege.

Even so, to order 'weapons free' over the continental US would require some pretty heavy rank - like a one star general. With 1,400 rounds expended and six civilians killed, I'd think everyone up the chain would stick to the party line of "there was something up there".

Either that, or Xenu was looking for L. Ron. [huh]

i heard of that before

I have heard of some of the explanation regarding that event and well its still very much unexplained. I have also had the very great miss fortune to meet some of the very crazy people that swear that it was a mass UFO sighting. But i guess its one of those things you kind of have to figure out on your own.

There really was no idea of what was to come. At the time FDR had wittled away our military to barebones. Pearl Harbor was attacked, Phillippines was about to go under, Australia was next, the Malay Peninsula, Indonesia was swarmed. So it is easy to panic.

1941 was a hilarious movie. I love the first scene where the Jap sailor opens up the hatch on the submarine, the girl is naked on the telescope and he yells; "hollllllywooooood! holllllllllywoooood!" and of course one of my favorites actors; Slim Pickens was in the movie. I've got to buy that one on DVD.lol

The interesting part is that on Feb. 24, 1942, there really was an unexplained aerial event over L.A., an event that history has come to know as the Battle of Los Angeles.

An unidentified aircraft appeared in the sky over L.A. late on the night of the 24th. Sirens were set off, and the city -- taking a cue from London's response to WWII bombings by the Nazis -- immediately went into blackout mode in anticipation of an imminent attack. Anti-aircraft artillery was fired at the aircraft for nearly an hour (1,400 shells in all, according to Wikipedia) to no apparent effect. No bombing ever did come, though six people did die as a result of the incident -- three from the anti-aircraft fire and three from heart attacks. The city lifted its state of emergency later that morning.

The DVD is GREAT! At least my copy has an entirely different occupation for Slim Pickins with extra scenes too. Also the editorial is quite good. EVERYTHING in that movie was based on some actual or fabled event of WW2. The secret Jap airfields, poisoning the reservoir, the AA gun in the front yard was actually some poor guy in Maine...
