Ladies and gentlemen! It is 4 days before the main event! The inevitable awards! The star studded spectacle! The creaser of the crop!

The Academy Awards!

It's an all out war fare! Guns are firing, cannons are exploding, Brittany Spears is losing her hair, and old Oscar hasn't come home for dinner in a week! Why? Because even HE is wondering who will take home the gold!

Who will win the highest screen award?

Cast your vote in the poll and cross your toes that you're right!

I'd like to see what others here choose between Babel or The Departed. The newspapers are firing up a race between them for good publicity.

I haven't seen any of the nominated films.

Now with cable, Netflicks, OnDemand, etc.....I hardly go to the cinema anymore. Back in the day, I would make it a point to see all of the nominated films before the Oscars, it seemed to make the show much more fun to watch.

I'm a fan of Alan Arkin and yet I have not seen Little Miss Sunshine. This must be done before vote is cast.

Its a hoot! One of Steve Carell's best preformances. Alan Arkin is funny, but Im not too fond of his character. The two best characters are the brother and sister. They are just delightful (in a strange dysfunctional way).

As for my vote, I dont think any of them deserve it. I wish awards places would stop filling a category just to fill it, and just leave out movies if they dont make the cut.

This year's awards feel like "The Year of Rehashes".

Babel - Inarritu is doing the confusing storyline thing again?

The Departed - A gangster flick from Scorsese. What is this, his 4th already?

Letter From.. - The "other side of the story"(therefore award worthy) version of Flags of Our Fathers.

I am going to watch The 40 Year Old Virgin instead.

Scorcese! I hope for a sweep here, best picture & best director.

True, he's done more than a few gangster films, but he is overdue for the Oscar and I will be rooting for him.

Curiously, some of the best American films have been gangster films, including the very top film(s), Godfather I and II.

Well, I can only judge by the ones we ran -- I rarely get over to the multiplex to see the ones we don't run!

The Queen -- *Loved* it. Excellent script, and an absolutely brilliant performance by Helen Mirren. Just an all around solid crowd-pleasing picture that deserves every award it'll win.

Little Miss Sunshine -- I'm with LD on this, I didn't like Arkin's character much, even though the acting job itself was very well done. The standout for me was the little girl -- a really dead-on performance.

Babel -- Ecch. Too long, too pompous, too full of its own Social Significance, too self-consciously "arty" in its technique -- and I had to watch it every day for two weeks. Interminable. Adriana Bazarra was the best thing about the film, though -- she deserves her nomination, and may well win.

I haven't seen The Departed or Letters from Iwo, although we are yet hoping to get the latter film if the distributor will cooperate. Flags Of Our Fathers played the multiplex last fall, but for some reason Letters never played this area at all.

I honestly think it was a great year for movies. The 2000s have been terrible and this year was a step up. However, the Best Picture award is always stupid. The movies cannot really compete in the same category.

I saw Babel yesterday.
It is as undeserving of an Academy Award as Crash was.
Two of the pointless storylines should not have been included in the film and one or two easily expanded upon themes in the film should have been added. A "no-brainer" to exlcude this one.

Once Again... I'm not suprised

Although I really enjoy Scorsese's work, a good film from him often overshadows others that I find superior. The Departed was an excellent film and held a few suprises but I feel the Prestige has been overlooked and IMHO is a much better film from both an artisic and creative perspective.

Lets face it Leonardo and Mary Mark are the darlings while Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale
are not.

Well.... these are the Acadamy Awards which have always been a mystery to me. It seems that being in the old boy club here pulls more weight than original story lines, great cinematography, acting, production and direction.

Considering the list of nominees presented, I'll probably skip the Acadamy Awards again this year.

Glad Scorsese won, but I really do wish the Academy would start getting it right on the first try. I hate when they have to give out an Oscar a particular year because so-and-so got snubbed previously. Especially as in Scorsese's case when they could have given it to him multiple years.

Other than that, it was just okay. I liked The Departed but I was rooting for Little Miss Sunshine. Anything but Babel and I'm happy.

True, it's more like a Lifetime Achievement Award , but in any event, he's deserving.

With the films Scorsese has made over the years he is given an Oscar for a remake?? The audience clapped for this?? Unbelievable.
The Academy Awards are obviously for wannabes and has-beens.

Lately the Oscars seem to be giving out awards not solely for the work at present, but to appease, or to acknowledge the work of that particular artist as a whole. [huh]

I thought that was what the lifetime award was for.
