Mike, I think it's the better for having the bow regardless of what the film hat had. It's what the film hat should have been even if it wasn't.

Thanks Alan, that was a hard hat to view, they never really gave you a clear shot of it on that side of the hat.

This hat from the movie looks like it was made with western weight felt. A conversion perhaps?

Major Moore did a great job here though.

I am with you Alan, Mike did great and I love the bow. The hat has all the spirit of the film hat, yet it also has its own style too.

This hat will fast become my go to hat. I can already tell!

Don't know enough about hats to be able to tell that on sight. If western weight felt is lighter, it would make sense with him doing all that running around in the heat.

No, western weight is thicker, usually heavier and stiffness is common. A little steam will wake the stiffener up in a modern western, so you end up with almost a fuzzy cardboard. It's tough, thick felt.

Given time though, the felt will soften, especially if it's worked and kneaded and beaten and what have you. I never really noticed until this thread, but in the pic from the film the edge of the Nameless Treasure Hunter's hat is ragged. You can see the trim marks on the brim.
Also, look at how the top and the bottom edges of the ribbon are puckered and pulling away from the crown. I've seen the movie numerous times, but I can only now really see the amount of distressing that hat was given. I'd imagine by the time any hat went through that, it would be semi-floppy and more form fitting, not "New Resistol" stiff. I'd bet it was sat on and beaten up and soaked and beaten some more before getting a whiff of fuller's earth.

Great choice for a hat, distinctive in subtle ways. Almost like the sort of slouch hat I imagine The Shadow wearing.

Thanks for the info! Always glad to learn new things here. I guess Indiana Jones MUST have gotten his own hat after all, but Fedora was his inspiration.

Is that what the treasure hunter is called in the credits, "Fedora"?

Cool name!

I learned something new as well.

Jovan, thanks, glad to be able to help, but I'll give credit where it's due. Almost everything I said I first learned either having a cocktail here in the Lounge, or dodging poison darts over at Club Obi Wan (indygear.com)

I'm just payin' it forward, as the cliche says. I'm a student, too.

RBH, you are right about the change in the hat by lowering the crown down a little, it looks good on you.

Has anyone that you know of made this hat before? seems that most people want the IJ hat we all seem to see being worn in the IJ movies, I have not seen this hat before, I am sure that alot of the current hat models with a center dent in the crown have been made into this style by owners, but was just wondering if anyone has posted a photo and called the hat the early IJ hat or 1912 or along those lines.

I know that Steve made a hat modeled on this same hat.
But you know how we are here on the Fedora Lounge... we have to name our hats! :D

The fact that the creases are not very defined possibly because of a thicker felt and the uniform thick width of the edge seen in the pic leads me to believe so. Not 100% sure but it does looks hand cut to me and felt at the edge is really appears thicker than fedora weight felt would be. Check out that brim edge. Its a plank :)

Looking at the photo from the movie of "Fedora" the hat he has on, does look to be a thicker hat body. There is no telling what the folks in the wardrobe dept. did for a hat for Fedora, they may of had a stock western hat, that they cut the brim down some, made a few other mild changes due to the person "Fedora" was not going to be in much of the movie, but just in the early part.
This gave all of us who had watched IJ earlier movies, to understand were IJ may have gotten the hat bug from, due to Fedora giving him the hat.

No matter how hard a person tries to make a hat like another hat someone has on, it will never be 100%, they will get very close, but every hat takes on a mind and shape of it's on, because of the way each of us wear and use a hat.

Thanks for finding that photo to share with us.

Sanded on the Green Hornet last night, it is soft and thin. Should have made this hat to wear on March 17th.

Might have to start on a tan slouch hat pretty soon.
