That's It! Nothin' But Pork Pies and Stingies For Me!

SHUFFLED off to...
Ever since I was a kid, I've worn hats with a full brim. And almost everyone of those was a stingy. Over the past couple of years I've tried to broaden my horizons, and spent a LOT of money doing so. I tried wider brim vintage fedoras. I've tried Homburgs. I've tried high-crown Akubra Feds. I've tried lower crown Akubra Sydney's. I've tried new! I've tried vintage! Borso, Stetson, Dobbs, Mallory, Champ, Lee, and on and on and on! And, you know what? NONE of them work on me! I don't know what it is about my head and my face, but those wider brim, taller crown, down-turned-front-brim hats just don't cut it! Brim up, all around pork pies and stingies, that's all I can do! And, I got to tell ya - it's cheesin' me off that I can't pull off those others. I just look eminently...dorkish!

So, someone once told me that I have to recognize my limitations, whatever they may be. And when it comes to lids, now I have.

Thank you for listening to my rant.

Oh, and keep an eye on the classified section - those hats that I have acquired that I can't 'modify', well, they'll be goin' on sale soon! And ALL of them are 7 & 5/8's or bigger.

And I'm the opposite. I have three stingy-brimmed hats in 7 5/8 and 7 3/4 that I realize don't work so well for me because I need at least a 2" brim. So, PM sent with pictures. :)

You'll probably be happier with a brim that fits your face size and shape. You'll wear the hat,the hat won't wear you...I have a thin face so I can't pull off more than about 2 1/4" brim. This took a long time to learn for me. I'll keep my 2 1/2" 40's style from Art though. I love that hat too much to let it go.

I salute you for having the taste and mindset to decide what works for you and go with it. Sorry it was an expensive prospect, but it's worth it if it helps you wear your hats with confidence.

And that's why all the styles!

Hi,

No one style fits all folks equally well. Well, maybe the ball cap does, but that's a case of equally *un* well! :p

Now, I fit better under something with a wider brim, 2 3/4 to 3 inches and a taller crown. I've tried most of the crown and brim styles, and it's the alpine crease or simple center crease with front pinch that works best for me. Also, a thinner ribbon looks better than a wider one.

So, most of my hats will wind up being in either the Open Road or Stratoliner styles. I've learned enough at this point to make that prediction. :D

One of these days, I'll have to pare down some based on what either doesn't look quite right or those I simply don't wear. So far, though, the collection isn't so large that I feel the need to pass any on.

As far as the stingy brim styles go, I look horrible in them. So, you can rest easy in the thought that I, at least, won't be competing with you when it comes to acquiring hats! lol

Later!

Hey Lucky.. Like Bolthead said, nothing wrong with stingies. It may seem like there is some stigma attached to to them here at times, But I always tell myself that this is why we are all different, different likes and dislikes are the spice of life. If we all wore 3 inch tall crowned hats it would be a boring world indeed. Like Telly always said "Who loves ya baby!"

I only wear stingies... two inch or smaller (preferably smaller). I get so ticked when I see a nice c-crown (not as easy to find.. I don't wear center dent) and it has a larger brim.

I was told by the wife the other day to "take off and never wear again" a cheap stingy I was wearing. She said I am just to big a guy to wear such tiny hats. So...I'll be looking at what you have to sell also...I to am a 7 5/8...:D
