That 1940's fit

I have a lead on a suit, dated 1942, that is 2 inches over my measured size.

My question, for those who have vintage double breasted suits, is how should these classic suits fit?

I'm told that the fit should be close, for that tapered look.

So help me out people... is two inches enough for that good fitted look?

Boy I dislike replying to my own threads first, but I was speaking with my father, who owns many a fine suit, and told him my situation and he tells me
"call a Brooks Brothers, they will know."

Sure enough, I give the Seattle store a ring and they tell me that yes, a form fitting suit was very much the goal of suits in the 40's and that two inches, while close, will be enough for that good vintage fit. They also, upon hearing that I'm visiting in November, told me to stop by with the suit so they can take a look at it. Great service from Brooks Brothers!

This fitting was also confirmed in previous emails from a good vintage minded friend.

But I still welcome anyone to discuss the aspects and fit of the 1940's suits... and I'll be sure to post pictures in the show your suit thread when I get it.
