TFL sale price

Wondering about your thoughts. If someone gets a jacket for a ridiculous, once in a lifetime price, is the expectation to sell it here for the same price? Just curious. I do so but it got me thinking what the general consensus is. As an example, I got my JL / Leatherman M200 for $75 and would sell it here for maybe a bit more to cover shipping, if that. But am I on an island?

You sell it for what you want to get paid for releasing it. I think it’s a nice gesture to pass along a good deal. I have done so and I’ve even given jackets away for free…But…if I nab a good deal and need the funds to help fuel another purchase…I will sell for what I need to get out of it and acquire the next piece. I think that’s totally fair. I also think you are generous with your sales. You have passed on many a good deal to folks here (myself included). So IMO you sell for what you decide is fair.

I like to try and get back what I paid and cover shipping, or maybe a little less. But I have not had great luck moving things along. A few here or there but often if it fits I often decide to just keep it. Or even if it doesn't fit, I think I will just loose some weight. Yeah, right.
As an after thought most of the stuff I have put up for sale I acquired used, so it had already lost its new price value.

I usually put what I feel is a “fair price” on a jacket, but often I will come to an “arrangement” with a member for a sale price. Sometimes I take a hit, and others I make a little- it all evens out.

Thanks. I appreciate the responses. I do try to sell for what I got it for, especially to active folks on the site. And if I know they will appreciate the jacket, then certainly no problem. Even for a bit less than what I paid. I better be ok with the sale price I set, right? I do think that’s normally the way to go here on TFL.

But I’ve seen the other tact here, which I’m also cool with. Hey, it’s your jacket, do what you want with it. If the price is something I can live with, regardless of how much was first paid by the seller, I will hit BIN or message the seller, quick.

I agree but I think people who buy something in the classifieds here and then immediately repost it for more than they paid is in poor taste and goes against the collective ethos of this forum. It doesn’t happen often but it has in the past. Same way someone might brag about getting xyz jacket for $ and then posting it for sale @ $$$$.
That said, if I missed something I really wanted and it’s posted at a higher price (within my limits for reasonable) I would not balk.

I bought a jacket from a member who was trying to sell it for $400 more than what he paid for it from another member. I ended up buying the jacket for $200 over his purchase price without knowing. I only found out after the fact when the original owner contacted me about the jacket. I was pretty annoyed considering it was a catch and release on his part and he was trying to make a large profit off of it.

Funny thing is that he was also looking to possibly trade his jacket for a larger size which I had in brand new condition, and he asked if I would do the trade and throw in cash even though his jacket was used and mine was new. Lol

I don’t mind if some one tries to make a killing on a sale. If I think it is overpriced. I just won’t buy it, nothing personal. Kind of the same with low ball offers on something I’m selling, I just won’t sell it. I see that a lot on The Bay. Nothing personal, but I’d just as well keep it than take a big hit on it.

I don’t mind if some one tries to make a killing on a sale. If I think it is overpriced. I just won’t buy it, nothing personal. Kind of the same with low ball offers on something I’m selling, I just won’t sell it. I see that a lot on The Bay. Nothing personal, but I’d just as well keep it than take a big hit on it.

That sucks and that’s precisely what I mean about going against the ethos of this place. I am fortunate to know a core of guys in my size range that I trust (and I assume they trust me). With that core I have no fear about conducting business here. I have a similar core on other platforms. I’m always relieved when they respond to an ad I have. I like dealing with people I know aren’t out to pillage.
One thing I’ve learned. Ask any new buyer a couple questions of your own.

Agreed. I focus on what I am spending, not on what the seller spent to own the jacket he now is selling. But I still put the jacket for sale on TFL at or around what I bought it for. Even though it shouldn’t and doesn’t matter. I’m looking around the room and can’t find the fool.

I've never sold a jacket but once I did come across a rare 1940s Australian suit in great condition in a thrift store. It was very small, too small for me and I'm a 36 in US suits and 38 in British, and I knew that a particular member here (Baron Kurtz) would love it. I bought it and sold to him at cost. $60 AUD and I think it was about $25 AUD to ship to the UK.
The good Baron, like so many of you guys in this forum, shared a lot of great info and history on vintage clothing, and on top of that I just like and respect him, so I was happy to be able to snag a bargain for him. I got no issue wuth guys wanting to make a buck but when it comes to guys here who've contributed so much camaraderie and knowledge and who I see as friends, I'd just pass it on at cost.

Sometimes when I got a good deal on a jacket but it doesn't fit, I approach fellow tfl members who I think would be interested in the jacket. I send them a pm and if they're interested, I'll sell it to them for what I got it for.

This way I'm sure the jacket is going to someone who appreciates it and does not buy it only to flip it.

I think your right on brother. I typically post a jacket here when I'm wanting my money back adding on to it shipping cost. The same jacket will be on ebay with a higher price tag. If I sell on ebay I profit. So that way there is a potential to profit an a potential to be even. Either way it moves on.

As someone who is new to the forum, I really appreciate this thread and the discussion of the ethos. I would imagine that others like me have come to this site via the classifieds, or made it there in short order. Then made an uninformed purchase here or elsewhere just to find similar or the same exact jacket/coat for less. I could see where that would really polarize someone and their done. No one except for the short sighted seller wins. Most of all it is the communal loss.

The caveat to that from my perspective some times you just have to overpay and be ok with it. A reasonable price on the right day ends in an impulse buy too often. The deals come and we all know what its like when you are getting good jacket karma. We also all know that we have to break out 100's of times more than a vintage retailed for. It is a great feeling to know who will post an awesome jacket for a more than reasonable price and when they post in the classified you can't click the link fast enough.

Where I have an issue is the over inflation misrepresentation double whammy. I now gravitate to some members and catch/release for info; for the description and insight. To this point, I took the long way around the barn but asking a buyer a question can be golden. Over paying just to get a jacket that doesn't fit or move can ruin a weekend.

My listings usually generate some great back-and-forth conversations with members. I’ve met some in-person, and become friends with many others because of the Classified section.
When it comes to TFL sales, I only list the good ones here. The random, not-so-great ones go out on the Bay without fanfare.
