Teardrop Crown

The new Akubra Fed has arrived and I want a teardrop crown.
Please can anybody direct me to a previous thread giving instructions on how to do one ?
Failing that, can anyone simply give me some instructions on how to achieve one ?

I bought a center crease hat new and they steamed it into a teardrop at the shop. I realize now, far too late, that I ought to have had them steam it right back into a crease. (Though I prefer teardrop). What happened was that with the material being taken up by the teardrop, the hat rode up on my head and is now a bit too loose. It fit perfect with the center crease but not with the teardrop. It started finally bugging me about 6 months after and now a year later I'm going to see if I can get the crease put back in. I'm fairly certain I won't be able to do that though because I know the folds are going to be noticeable, like trying to let down the hem on pants.

So my suggestion is, get the teardrop put in, try it on, and if it doesn't sit right, steam it right back out.

Regards,

Senator Jack

Do it yourself

The Fed lends itself to experimentation and fussing. Try all kinds of shapes.

I love a tear drop crown. I have made them from open crowns and from Akubra cowboy hats that I have cut down and made into fedoras. You need to have a tall crown to make a tear drop. Personally, I never use steam. I just use a water spray bottle and lightly spray the area to be reshaped. I then work the water into the felt with my fingers. I shape it. Let it dry overnight and do it again to get the shape I like. Akubra's respond well to this kind of shaping. Be sure to have the hat sitting upright (as worn) while it's drying. I use a foam head I got at a hairdresser's shop but you could rest it on any number things. You have to be a little inventive. On a teardrop, I usually do the top center bulge last by shaping it over a soft ball. It sounds weird but I've gotten great results this way.
