The 24 Hour Cancer Danceathon

I’ve been to a couple though not the last one… as a member of team Old School -- and being one that has held on, who has seen the swing dance scene change around me – I’ve felt a bit lost in the crowd at times. I look around at the swing dance scene of today and see how it is a very different world from when I began. Many that dressed up have moved on and many that came just to dance are dressing just to dance (sweats and dancewear). The look of a crowd chock full of men and women clad well for a night on the town was the look that drew me into dancing several years back… and I understand that the 40’s dance has now truly decoupled from the 40’s look, yet once in a while… once now and again I like to hark back to when you could see men and women wearing their suits and dresses with their hair pomaded and put up. Now and then I hark back to when swing was the dance for the person that was endeared to that era when the charts were full of big band music.

Every year the dance is held and the last few have seen a tapering off in donations.

So all this in mind, I’ve decided to head up a team for the next Cancer Danceathon called team 1942 It’s about a year away, yet that’s my intent. It’s not or the dancer that wishes to show up in sweats and a t-shirt… this is for the dancer that wants to, loves to and sometimes misses getting dressed up to hit the dance floor in style.

Why?
It's a good cause

I’ve had one close friend from JPL Pass away from cancer.

Science is getting better at understanding cancer and treatments with new technologies and by refining old ones. Anti replicating drugs and radiation help, yet it’s what we don’t know… the things that money can help discover that will make the difference between life and death in the next 10 years.

10 bucks here, 20 bucks there… many of us throw that much at ebay on a weekly basis (the classic cup o coffee donation argument).

Anywho, I’ll keep updating all who will read. If you are interested in this team, contact me.

Info for March 2010 24 hour Danceathon is starting to hit the website… I’ll update and post more as more information comes in about the event.
