Summer Weight Gloves

In my eternal quest to keep as much of my body as possible from being exposed to the sun, I have been considering a pair of gloves to be worn while outside on a hot day. White cotton seems rather impractical... anyone have any suggestions? Should I simply be looking at acquiring another pair of white cotton gloves and dying them a more practical shade (a nice darkish grey appeals), or is there something in a lighter leather, like a lambskin, say, that might do my job? Essentially, I'm thinking of something in the style of morning dress gloves in the right weight. Currently I only expose my face and hands to the sun; a hat keeps most of the sun off, but alas my face has been affected alarmingly in comparison to my natural pallor elsewhere. Time to resort to the sunblock there, as I fear the office would object to a ski mask!

If you are going to find some practical gloves for daily use, check out your local X-army store and look for a pair of tactical gloves. They act as second skin so you never loose your grip or sensitivity in your hands. Unfortunately I have never seen them in anything but black. You also have to buy them in person to get the fit right.

As for the sun on your face, you have obviously forgotten the three S's of sun protection. Slop slip and slap. Slop on some sunscreen, slip into a long sleeve shirt and pants, and Slap on a hat. Don't forget your sun glasses

from Tilley endurable web site http://www.tilley.com/

CERTIFIED SUN PROTECTION:
The fabric and style of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.

You still need SPF 15 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family.

Is there any reason you try to hide so much from the sun?

I would consider going made-to-measure with Chester Jeffries or buying a pair of morning gloves in slate-grey doeskin. You might also find that the morning dress hire emporia could supply you with a pair of grey gloves in some lighter fabric, although I would avoid anything of this type made from artificial materials, for practical (heat retention, encouraging perspiration) as well as aesthetic reasons.

Scotrace, sounds good, I'll keep an ear to the ground for that, thanks.

I do try to stick to natural materials for anything I want to be breathable, that's a good point. I've been planning a pair of doeskins for morning wear for a while, a pair of those for regular wear might be an idea.... I've also thought of simply dying a pair or two of white cotton, might work if I want a couple for colour matching with an outfit...

Thanks, I might check those out - black would go with a fair chunk of my wardrobe, so it could be worth having a pair of those. I know of a few good military surplus places near home, so I might go looking there....

I have gotten lazy about applying the sunblock since I spend most of my time indoors and never go outside without a had of some description. Most of this summer I've been in a wide brim too.... I guess it's one of those things. I need to get back into wearing the sunblock daily for the little time I'm outside. That, and maybe to realise that what I consider "tanned" a lot of folks regard as more akin to death warmed up. lol

Pure vanity, I think! What I find aesthetically pleasing in myself has always been to be as pale as is possible (ideally I'd love to have that pale tone that is so porcelain, it's almost blue), then there's also the aging effect of the sun - I read somewhere a doctor saying that 90% of the visible signs of aging are directly attributable to sun exposure. A small part of it is health related (I know a few folks who developed various skin cancers following a single experience of sun burn), but predominantly it is an aesthtic preference. Guess I never did the goth thing as a teenager, so it's still in there trying to get out. lol
