suit questions

Hi all,

I think I am in the right place for this. But I have two quick questions on a suit and overcoat I got off of ebay.

1) This suit must be a custom made suit as there is no makers tag it says 'supreme fashion tailored clothes'. But the lapels are really friggin wide for a 40's suit. They must be at least 6 inches. Is that a normal distance for these suits-or did I luck out and get a one off?

2) Can I wear the over coat with the suit or is it more of a tux overcoat? What hat should I be wearing with the O/C?

I am by no means an expert, but that 4x2 button setup was something seen in 1930s suits and then came around again in the 1950s. By looking at the suppression at the waist given by the darts, the wideness of the lapels, and visual lack of pocket flaps, I'd say late 1930s...I sure haven't seen a 1950s jacket with that type of suppression. I have a late-30s/very early 1940s suit jacket that has that exact same type of suppression...it produces a very distinct silhouette. However, I'd really like to see the label it does have, as well as the inside to say for certain. Others on here have better knowledge of button placement on 4x2s and can give you a more definite on the date.

Other clues would be on the pants - the cuff, the diameter of the leg at the bottom, button or zipper, etc. Also, I have, more than once, found a date on the inside flap on one of the pant pockets. Matter of fact, that is how I was able to date a suit I found at a thrift store...Sept 13, 1941...awesome.

Not sure I even answered your questions - I think most 1940s suits had decently wide lapels. Some were extravagantly wide. Yours do not look too far out of the norm.

As far as the overcoat, I cannot answer your questions to be historically accurate, but if they work for you, I'd say rock it.

That type of buttoning can be found since the Middle-30's throughout the 40's and 50's. I say this fine example could be from the late 30's to mid-40's.
Lapel width varied a lot... considering it is a tailor-made piece, it reflected the taste of the costumer. Nothing "unique" about these nice wide lapels.

Period-correct the coat can be worn with dark, formal suits during daytime or evening wardrobe. You should wear white shirt and a stiff black hat (bowler, Homburg or tophat) with that one.

Hi Red Leader,

Here are the two tags. The union made tag is all I have to date this thing with. I looked under and in and around and all I found were some tailor marks.

Two-types-I did not think about a silk scarf, I like it thanks.
