What would you recommend? Linen?

I am going on a cruise and would like to dress up a little for dinner. I have a tux for formal nights.

no specifics on a linen suit, but you could wear an ivory jacket for semi formal night. :)

I get the light color jacket, but struggling with the whole outfit. Pants and shoes too.

For the semi formal night, you'd wear the same as the tux (cummerbund though, not vest) and replace the black jacket with an ivory one. Paddy has a linen suit I think, he might chime in later.

Linen would be perfect, just remember to bring along a travel steamer. ;)

And for casual dress consider a guayabera shirt as they're considered an acceptable dress option in the Caribbean.

I got a pair of off white silk trousers at Joseph A Bank this summer and I swear by them. Silk can be used for both very hot and very cold environments. Great stuff.
I'm also a big Hawaiian shirt guy. I just found out that Hawaiian shirts started when the Japanese laborers in Hawaii over a hundred years ago used to take worn out silk komonos and recut them into simple short sleeved shirts for manual labor. They had spectacular Japanese prints as their raw materials. Silk, rayon and even cotton are all permissable for a Hawaiian shirt, tho rayon is the classic. I think the gaudier the better, but that's just me. I think a Hawaiian shirt, white silk trou and a Panama hat can be the epitome of coolness.
Likewise a guayabera is designed for tropical climes. There are some very elegant ones available.

Indeed they've practically served as my uniform this summer.

Honestly the heat is so bad even now in NYC that though i'm quite eager to start going back to long sleeves, suits, and overcoats i don't predict it happening for another two months. Amazing how the weather is here, as in Ireland the weather in August required jackets or sweaters even at the hottest points of the day when i was there.
