Strong enough for a man....or made for a woman?

I found this jacket at a vintage clothing store. Tried it on, and it fits pretty well!

The store placed this jacket in the men's section. However, as I look at it more closely, I think it's a woman's jacket because the chest zip pocket is on the right side rather than the left.

.....Or am I wrong? It's tagged a size 40. I thought women's jackets were sized 8, 10, 12, 14, etc.

Also, can anyone tell me if this jacket is pre- or post-AMF-Harley? In what time period was it made?

Thanks in advance.

It closes right lapel over left, wich is a good sign that it is a women's jacket.

Oh, duh. I didn't even notice that. Thanks for educating me!

I just assumed it was a men's jacket because of the tagged 40 size, which seems unconventional to me for woman's jacket sizing.

Still, I'd like to know in what era the jacket was made.

Could be '81, right after Willy bought the company back and just prior to him embroidering and embossing every leather jacket they make...

this left vs right side closure connected to gender is so stupid, it made much more sense when it is meant for right handed people or left handed people.

Women's shirts are buttoned on the opposite side from men's shirts. So I guess that's the rationale behind the reverse zip on women's jackets.

I know, still stupid in my opinion. since it has to do with in old time women were dressed by maids or whatever, but especially since it is not a consistent rule, women's pants has zipper alignment just like men's, some women's jacket open to the right just like men's, a men's roland sands jacket open to the left, so this rule is not clear anymore

There had been some clothes makers (particularly Europeans) that flipped zipper sides even on garments specifically made for men. The 40-size label on this jacket is a good clue that you should question whether the flipped zipper is really gender related or just a chosen style on this leather jacket potentially made for men. It certainly looks masculine.

Your points are well-taken. But as other members have pointed out, this jacket is almost unquestionably the HD Cycle Queen jacket, made for women. USA-made (not European), zipper on the opposite side and chest pocket on the opposite side.

Even though most people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, I'm not wearing a jacket known as the "Cycle Queen."

Ah, yes, makes sense. I don’t know, I’d still might rock it... but not for that price

Jackets here often, as per Europe, use a left hand zip for men. I use both and I don't notice the difference.
Hi Seb, I have an RM Williams short waxed jacket(Longhorn) that is advertised on the Williams web page as a mans, but the final closure is to the left. This weekend I saw a full length duster of a New Zealand make(with closure snaps by Barbour) that also had this feature. Quite a few of the other Australian outdoor and riding wear also have this feature.
This is the A Hume page, an official RM Williams store in Kelso, Just a 20 minute bus ride from Aero at Galashiels.

Yep. I don't really understand how anyone can find it hard using a left hand zip. Its not like sliding in a bit of metal is a complicated process. :D Driving on the other side of the road... that's harder.
