Stratton fur felt Campaign hat >> Western?

I own an older Stratton fur felt DI hat. Similar new hats, in a dark, non-charcoal gray or chocolate brown are available inexpensively. Has anyone successfully shaped one of these hats' brims to emulate a Western hat? I refer to a moderate tricorn shape with Montana crown, emphasizing the word moderate.

When I hold its brim roughly in the shape I ask about, my DI hat looks "right," albeit the wrong color.

Archers be advised: This 3-inch brimmed hat CAN BE WORN while shooting Oneida Black Eagle ESC bows! Brim does not come close to touching bowstring during any part of the draw.

Seeley Lake -Montana?

I should be there and you sweating down here. Anyway, I have the darn things piled in boxes around the house. I've played around with several and they will re-shape pretty much anyway you wish. The thing to consider on the peaked Campaign Style hat is the crown height. I could be wrong but they seem to have a shorter crown height than the Sheriffs Model. Plus, you would have a hat you can keep on in a blow. Mine are mostly the brown color (Okla HP) and impressed with their durability to say the least. Its been out on the back deck now for about 10 days and rained on twice. I'm patient I guess:)

Seeley Lake, Montana -- 75 yards from state forest, about 1.5 miles from Lolo National Forest. And, yes, all right-thinking people should be here, or at least farther south in Missoula or the Bitterroot Valley. Last autumn my whitetail record was 16 in the backyard. So far this year, my best is nine.

I agree that modern Montana crowns are less peaked. This is a solvable problem. That's why we have dowel rod in varying ODs and distilled water.

From your mention of "piled in boxes," have you Strattons available? If you have, please E-mail me or PM.

FWIW, early M1911 hats were indeed higher crowned. They had some other differences from later ones as well, including brim stitching, and a grommet underneath the ribbon.
