I can't help but find it interesting that you don't know James Taylor, yet you DO know Chris LeDoux. And they were both major influences for

(By the way I Mustard up the nerve to listen to some Chris LeDoux at work today.):D

Well, people make weird associations. The other day I was dressed much like in the pic below...

... I passed near a group of teens, and I heard one of them say "Look! Sherlock Holmes!"

Sherlock Holmes? Of all things? Oh my... :eusa_doh:

I was in a hurry and could not waste my time, but I would have liked to go back, not to argue or something, just to try and illustrate them a little [huh] .

Looking sharp, Torpedo!

To play devi's advocate a bit though, and I don't necessarily like the phrase, didn't Sherlock Holmes wear a homburg or fedora in the latest film? Maybe that's where they got it, I don't know...

Usually he's associated with a tweed deerstalker cap of some kind.

You have NEVER heard of James Taylor? He's only been putting out hits since 1969 and he lives in the Chapel Hill area up your way :) WOW :)
Well I just moved to the area. I listened to a bit of his music last night after reading this and... not really my style. I'm more of a Johnny Cash guy. Though I'll often be found cruising a long with some Sinatra, Armstrong, Fitzgerald, Charlotte Church, AC/DC, there's really no telling.

bbshriver, what is that youre driving?
Unfortunately, I'm not driving it, merely sitting in it. That beauty is the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe. Luxury has a very nice lap

Because Chris Ledoux is THE MAN when it comes to country music... right behind Johnny Cash. He was the real deal.. went to college on a rodeo scholarship, won the national chapionship, made records in his basement and sold them out of his truck at the rodeo. For most of his career he didn't have a contract (not sure if he ever did, maybe towards the end).

Garth Brooks on the other hand has a marketing degree, smashes guitars on stage, and spent part of his career as "Chris Gaines" the rock-star.

Ah yes. A while back at work I was leaving wearing my rain-coat and brown stetson fedora and one of the guys at work says "look at Mr. Sherlock Holmes". And that was before the recent movie.

Most DEFINITELY King George for true country!!!
Bocephus is more Outlaw Country to me = Southern Rock influence with the roots from southern Alabama of Hank Senior.
I consider Kenney Chesney more Pop Country. Don't even ask me about Keith Urban...

Plus Torpedo, you do actually look a bit like Robert Downey Jr. in that movie. Just a bit. I can actually see where those youths were coming from, although I still think they needed some education. -M

Yea, I really don't like "pop" country... Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, etc.

I'm a big fan of the Outlaw variety (Cash, Jennings, Jr., DAC, etc), and Western. Plus the sub-genre "Texas" country (Pat Green, Ray Willie Hubbard (the wiley llama), Gary P Nunn, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc)

With you on The Highwaymen & DAC. Same for Jerry Jeff. Dang sure miss Waylon & Johnny.
Really like Pat Green & also Joe Ely & the Flatlanders, tho I think 1 of them sounds too much like Dylan for my taste.

This thread seems to be taking a turn, but that's why I like this forum. Watched the CMA awards last week and was astounded at how much the new "country" performers sound like rock'n'rollers. Don't get me wrong, I like rock, but what about that good ole' twangy music, crying in your beer stuff we grew up with? At least they wear cowboy hats!

How far off topic can you be with a thread called Strange Comments???
This new stuff is too pop music produced to me. I like some Possum & Merle for sure.
Garth took it to another place but he did have some twangy good ones at the start.
Like Alan Jackson cause he is a GA boy & wears a nice hat! The one he did with King George about Murder on Music Row is so accurate!

Hey, I ain't complaining, I like talking about music as much as hats!:)

I agree, there are still a few new guys out there that carry on the tradition, but not as much as the old days. Just heard a song yesterday on Willie's Place XM by Possum about that very thing.

AJ is another of the "good ones". Garth is a mixed bag..
As far as newer, I like a lot of Brad Paisley, and oddly enough Taylor Swift, though I think she's more pop than country.
Miranda Lambert is pretty decent too.

Paisley is a good picker & has some good tunes.
Can't abide Taylor = way to teen angst pop for me.
Miranda did a good version of Coal Miner's Daughter the other night, she's got chops.
I saw Lady A last week & not sure I'd call them Country but they put on a good show = 2 more GA boys & a Nashville gal.
I get in the mood for some Bluegrass every now & then too...

Not a Lady A fan at all... if they come on the radio I switch channels. Not that I think they're bad musicians, just don't care for the music.

Miranda seems to be the real deal for sure.

Now Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn, they're country gals for sure.

There are some great new bluegrass acts out there now, too, although I still like Monroe,
Stanley Bros, Osbourne Bros, etc.
