If department stores (and haberdasheries) were the way they are now, men's shirts, socks, shoes, accessories, women's skirts, dresses, shoes, socks, hats, men and women undergarments and all other department store items, they probably had a whole stock of brands, colors and sizes for each. My question is if you, the novice, expert, intermediate vintage enthusiast have ever came across or own more than one of the same item, either in a different size or color, and what's the story behind how you found them?

Yes yes and yes.

I've collected vintage for 25 years, before it was popular, so I found some nice collections, thankyouverymuch.

The two most recent examples that I remember is that I walked into an Antique Store that was closing and they had boxes of 1920's silk stockings still in wrappers. I talked with the owner a while, and she told me no one wanted them. I bought the whole batch for a reasonable price.

A more recent example is that I walked into a garage sale where almost everything was from the 1920's. (Note I didn't say stuff was in good condition). I ended up with boxes of goodies, including many duplicate items. Apparently, the woman never threw anything away.

Do buttons count? I recently ran into some vintage buttons in sets, but those are pretty easy to come by. Some were marked .25 for each bag. Gotta love it.

pretty rare to find the same item more than once these days. I had a Haband tie from the 40s - now in possession of another lucky FLounger, god i hate the 40s ties! I found 4 more of exactly the same tie on a rack in a vintage store in Indiana. 2 were silk like my one, and two were rayon, maybe a cheaper line, but the same printed pattern.

That, sadly, is the extent of my identikit vintage finds.

I don't know if you count army surplus stuff, but (despite my pacifist leanings - go figure! ), I've been in and out of army suprlus clothing since i was about 14 and able to get it to fit (I actually still have a couple of old West German issue shirts that I bought when I was 14/15 - very baggy then, quite snug now!! lol ). I've seen and had a lot of duplicate stuff there. A lot of what I see in sotres now is - as far as I can make out - often 1970s stuff, though I've also seen sixties things selling, and earlier of course in much smaller numbers. The real beautfy of the 70s stuff though is that so much of it changed so little from the immediate post war period often til the early 80s.... cheapness of 70s era stuff as not "true" vintage, look of the oldr stuff. :) In my wardrobe I have a beautiful, blanket lined West German naval officer's pea coat / reefer coat, which is probably late 60s or 1970s. I had one of those back in the late 80s, grew out of it (it went to little brother who never much cared for it - my now sister in law ended up wearing it at a time), then about ten years ago bought a second one when they became available again. Still wear it at times in the winter. A lot like a US pea coat, but snugger fit, almost cut more like a blazer. Couldn't fit quite as big a jumper under it.

About 1992 or '93 in NY, I scored 4 never-worn, never-bashed late 40s-early 50s felts marked to Selco, a Brooklyn hatter's dating to 1898.

Of course I got that classic NY one-upping experience when I posted here about it years later. You know the routine: there was a whole stockroom or store or warehouse full of 'em, one guy got most of 'em dirt cheap...oh, and they're crapola anyway, always were. (Sucker.)

Well, who gives a rat's patoot? Not I. I got 4 deadstock 7 1/2s in just my style, for $50 a pop. If this be suckerdom, I've made the most of it.
