Aparently some of disappeared millionaire-adventurer Steve Fossett's belongings have been found by a hiker.

I sort of see Steve Fossett as a modern day Amelia Earhart. To keep this thread vintage related, feel free to discuss her or other famous missing aircraft from years past. See the link below for a very interesting list of what the authors' believe to be the most famous missing aircraft of all time, many of which are from the golden-era.

I know its really sad, I would not have done it but it was his life, the thing he lived for, adventure, so he dies doing what he loved, no matter what.
So many planes (WWII training flights) have crashed in, over, around the Sierra Nevada mountains, and no matter how much skills you have (not being a pilot myself), its near impossible to tell how high you are, where the mountains are, due to cloud cover, going alone in small plane, you are asking for trouble, RIP Mr. Fossett, awesome career :(

I hope that Steve Fossett's remains will one day be found in the Sierra Nevadas and that he will be laid at rest for the sake of his family and friends.

Many have been lost in their quests to conquer the unknown, to reach higher, to dare to be first. Perhaps none were more famous in mountaineering circles than George Mallory who was lost with Andrew Irvine in 1924 on the 3rd British Expedition to attempt Mt. Everest. Mallory's remains were found in 1999. Irvine's remains have not been found.

My Dentist as well...

In the late 80s I had a dentist who fancied himself quite the adventurer and would take a month off here and there to go on various safaris and adventures into the deep heart of Africa. One time he left and never came back. No, I'm not making it up - he just disappeared on one of his safaris and his remains were never found. I always liked "Dr. Alex" since he was such a nice guy (and I was about 12 when he disappeared) but I guess that happens from time to time. I do remember bumping into some family of his about 11 years ago and they told me at the time that his poor father had never gotten over it, which is to be expected.

My dentist...

My parents are on a safari right now. I hope they don't meet the same fate as your poor dentist!

Ahh...I wouldn't worry about it! From what I heard, he would take his own little safaris...similar to the 40s National Geographic thing! Hire some guys to carry your stuff and wander into the jungle for a month. It wasn't any kind of official safari or tour with guides.

Well, here's a drink raised to the safe return of your parents!
