Are they identical except one is beaver and the other is rabbit? By looking at the pictures I can't tell any obvious difference.
Ah, interesting! I didn't know what the difference was between the Chatham and Downs until now...very interesting. Thank you for your answer, too, Avedwards.avedwards said:I think you are correct in assuming that they are both the same hat but with different felt. It's like the Downs and the Chatham which are the same hat but in Royal and Sovereign felt respectively.
Good advice, sir. I will indeed do that. I was more or less just trying to learn more about what I see in hats, as opposed to spending that kind of money on a Pinnacle. But thank you.avedwards said:It was the first piece of information I got from this forum as I was contemplating buying a Downs but was advised to buy a Chatham which turned out cheaper than what a Downs would have cost from the British hat shop I looked at. Considering the minimal price difference I'd go as far as saying the Downs is a waste of a hat as the Chatham is better but the price difference isn't much at all.
As for the Pinnacle, I would only get it if you get it reduced as the rrp is more than you'd pay for a pure beaver custom hat. It's a nice hat by all means but you can get a hat just as good for less if you go to Art Fawcett plus he will also customise it.
I'd rather have Art Fawcett written in my hat because in the custom hat industry he is quite an esteemed hatter. I also wouldn't mind having the Penman logo on a hat as I think it looks quite good. While Stetson is a well know name, I'd rather have a hat with a bicyle logo and have to explain to people.gtdean48 said:Some will pay because of the branding...[huh]
I agree Alan but that is due to "branding" within our small group. Stetson is so well branded to the Gen Pop that it all but means "hat" like Kleenex means "tissue". I've got my Work of Art & trying to fund the next one.avedwards said:I'd rather have Art Fawcett written in my hat because in the custom hat industry he is quite an esteemed hatter. I know what you mean. The name Stetson does date back to 1865 after all so most people who know anything about hats will have heard of it.gtdean48 said:I agree Alan but that is due to "branding" within our small group. Richard Warren said:I recently got a Stetson Benchley. The most annoying thing about it is a little tag sewn behind the bow with "Stetson" written on it. Cannot be seen in the pictures of the hat. So watch out.
