Greetings folks,

I am searching for the name of an item. It is much older than the 30's. It's a sort of circular light in which has outlined figures (like a witch) cut out around it, and when you turn it on, the light spins and shines through the outlined figures, and bounces off the walls. Sort of like how a disco ball works, but this is metal, and I saw one in a movie once, which has witches cut out, and was lit by a candle.

Does anyone know the name of this mysterious item?

That's Easy...

That's easy, it's a Praxinoscope...actually you can thank Magneto for that one. Look here:

something a bit different

I had something like a Praxinoscope, but it was a Zoetrope

This is different from them both. Here's some video I took of a party light I have that is somewhat like what I'm looking for.

Now imagine that the color gels don't exist. The tube is made of metal or brass. Outlines of a witch are cut out about the metal. A candle lies inside. When spinning and lit, the light shines through the witch cut outs, projecting off the walls, appearing that the witches are flying around the room, like these color gels do.

Here's the kind of cut out witch I saw in the film: http://ameriyank.com/tubes/holidays/hallo/ay--hwitchbroom.jpg

yes! It was Sleepy Hollow, and yes! That is the light. Thank you Mr. Hepcat, and thank you FedoraGent for introducing me to early moving image devices.

Found a Golden Era version

The image cylinder appears to be from a later period, but it can be replaced with other designs imprinted on high-temp plastic (or even shadow cutouts on brass).
