In another thread decodoll mentioned purchasing a pair of spectators with whitening powder for them, so I was wondering as i have a couple of pairs of 40's spectators shoes (suede type) that when it comes to whitenning them what sort of products could you use?

Would you be able to use chalk?

I've used baby powder in the past. :) My mom originally told me about the suede powder , but every shoe repair I've gone to tells me it's not made anymore.

edit: That's funny. I just looked at your link, and I never even thought about using my tailors chalk. :)

Probably because no one wears smashing spectator shoes anymore, or even white suede ones. ‘Tis a pity...

It's funny, I thought of French chalk because I used to be around show horses, and that is one way they used to whiten their white stockings :)

White suede shoes used to come with chalk bags. About the size of a large rubber eraser, they were rectangular, made of a soft, porous canvas, and were full of fine chalk. I believe that men's white bucks (the expensive, Brooks Brothers kind) are still sold with chalk bags.

To whiten the shoe, you rubbed the chalk bag along its white surface.
