I love it when people talk about ribbon fraying, like it's damage, when in fact it was done as part of the style.
Doesn't seem like all that great a deal, though. Easy to find size, stingy brim.

The second one is a bigger size, is earlier, and has a wider brim, all of which make it more desirable. It has better pictures, a better listing, and was sold by a seller ( a member here) who knows his stuff, all of which drive the price up.

Actually, Dinerman, they both have the same width of brim, 2 3/8", a nice medium-width.:)

So, it comes down to head size and presentation.

Like you said about presentation. It looks wider in the second set of pictures, I guess because of the angle.

I won this one

This is my first post. I've been lurking around for a couple of months. I wanted to thank Brad Bowers for his excellent post on the Cavanagh Edge. Reading it made me decide to look for hats with this feature and to finally pull the trigger on this auction.

The price seemed fair to me. I was looking at the other hat as well, but I prefer the gray. I'm happy to read that they fraying is not considered damage but rather a styling feature.

I'll be sure to post some pictures once I receive it, although I doubt my camera can capture the hat better than the pics on the auction. It'll be my first felt fedora. I'm pretty excited to see how it looks, and how it looks on me.

Well, banquo, you got what looks to be a good one at a very good price. It borders on larceny, by today's standards. So congratulations to you.

Dinerman is right about that "fraying" on the trailing edge of the bow. It's a signature element of some Cavanaghs. I happen to have a dark blue, bound-edge Cav homburg (another extraordinarily nice hat, by the way, so thanks again, Ande in Kansas) with the same thing. I prefer to call it "feathering."

A Cavanagh is a very fine first hat! Or second, or third, for that matter. My brown Cavanagh is my favorite hat.
