I've been there a bunch of times. It was back in the days when the EC was still keen to fund legal research in the IT and communications fields - not so much of that under more recent frameworks. To be honest, though, I've never seen more than a few restaurants and the inside of a bunch of hotels and commission buildings. It is a great place to eat out in, though. If you like seafood, I can highly recommend Rugbyman No 2 - great setting, down by the docks. I don't do seafood at all, but they also provided an extremely good sirloin. In the old square, there's a few good restaurants. One beer cellar type place at the top end near the main road I used a couple of times, it's really good - try the stoempf (mahed potato with vegtables mixed in, almost like a stew, served with meat in place of potatoes or fries). I gather it's great for the beers too, though not being a beer man myself I didn't sample any.
I've been to Brussels once, but it was almost ten years ago... I remember it as a friendly and busy town. The vintage shops were filled with 70's leather jackets and velvet ladies jackets mostly, but I did buy a few old cameras at a flea market.
Oh, and don't forget to cover those french fries in mayonnaise...
I ahve been to Brussels but it sounds like it was quite a lot longer ago than others. I thought it was charming, adorable, I loved it. I could have walked around there forever. It had so muc old worldliness to it.
I've been to Brussels a couple times. It's a wonderful city, I stumbled upon the antiques market by accident, it was like walking into a dream. As far as places to go I think my favorites in Belgium are Bruges and Ghent, but Brussels is still a fantastic city.
I was in Brussels once for one afternoon and part of an evening, over 20 years ago. It was one of the most charming cities I ever went to. The people were charming, nice and kind.
I bought an outfit there that I loved to death and still hesitate to sell because it's so unique and brings back so many good memories.
