Most of the hat colors out there I can pretty much guess why they are named. Most names are evocative of something they are similar in color to. But what the heck is a silver belly? It is definitely more prevalent in Western hats so is it the name of some kind of cattle or something? Carbon Gray is kind of carbon colored and moonstone I can figure out but what's a Silver Belly?

I always assumed it related to the silver belly of a fur animal that the felt came from (e.g. beaver or nutria?) but that's just a guess. The dictionary search engine onelook.com (my go-to source for definitions) actually came up empty on this one. I'd be interested to know the answer as well.

Silver Belly is a color that refers to the natural color of the underbelly of the fur-bearers used for hats. Beaver, Nutria, European Hare, etc. Only the winter underfur of the animal is used for felt, and the finest fur on the animal is located on the underside, producing the finest grades of felt capable of the smoothest finishes.

Why is beaver & cashmere so highly X denoted? Isn't cashmere really a top notch version of wool? I'm confused which is not an abnormal state...:eusa_doh:

[huh] Because Stetson says so[huh] Regardless, the felt is extraordinary to the touch. I am sending to the Major for an reshape rather than sell it. The hat retails upwards towards a grand. [huh]

Stetson also makes a 1000X, chinchilla and beaver, trimmed with gold and diamonds.

My problem with that is the same concerning Montecristis. If I get the "museo" I could not wear it. I had a Montecristi woven by Alarcon. Very expensive very beautiful. I wore it one day and decided to take a walk on a pier. Very windy, very stupid and I was very lucky.

The panama never really saw the light of day again. I am glad the seagulls didn't soil it.lol lol
