Size Question

Just so I'm clear on this...if the size tag says 3/4 it means 6 3/4...yeah? And this tag is on a vintage whippet.

Thanks for posting this, somehow my thinking was backwards on this. A lot of sellers on ebay don't seem to know this either.

As one who has looked at A TON of hats in the past few weeks, I can safely say that 3/4 means 6 3/4.

Think of it this way... the most common sizes are 6 7/8 through 7 1/2, so anything marked 5/8 through 7/8 is assumed to be a 6, and anything marked between 1/8 and 3/8 is assumed to be a 7.

When I first started going through my inventory, I would look at a "3/4" hat, and think, "This definitely isn't a 7 3/4." But, I would be drawn to confirm the size by dropping it on my head for "pinhead" test, in hopes of finding an elusive 7 3/4, but I've learned that it ain't gonna happen.

If a hat was 7 3/4, it would have been custom ordered, and it would have been marked as 7 3/4.

If you can't touch the hat, then I'd recommend asking the seller to look under the sweat band. You'll usually be able to find a size marking inside the band, or... The seller could always attempt to measure the inside of the sweatband, but that is an aquired skill.

This definitely isn't right. "1/8", "1/4", "3/8", "1/2" and "5/8" all refer to hats in the size 7 range. "3/4" and "7/8" are tied to size 6. I think johnnyphi laid it out pretty well (with the exception of the "5/8" size).

Thanks, Jimmy. Truth be told, I've never seen a 7 5/8, but I have seen several hats marked 6 5/8, so you could be right.

The only thing I would question, johnnyphi, is the "5/8" size. I had always thought that "5/8" was tied to a size 7, but I'm not certain on this one. Tinmanzz, care to weigh in for the pumpkinheads?

I don't have a lot to base this on other than the fact I can't ever seem to find a hat that fits! If it only has the fraction of the size I would assume it is a 6. Hats around the 7 5/8 or larger sizes are few.

I don't mean to start an argument, but if that were consistantly true, I'd have about 10 vintage hats of size 7 3/8 or 7 1/2. I've tried several on, and had others measured. Turns out to be a 6 range every time... in my experience, anyway. [huh] I guess it's kind of like the X's for quality - ultimately it means nothing. Break out a tape measure and save yourself the headache.
