Yes, it's an old trick, the shot wipes the excess ink off of the dip pen's nib so it doesn't get clogged with dried ink. You'll see it more often with pewter type sets but you might be able to cover the container with something colored to match the set.

I have my dad's old tanker desk in storage at my sister's office so what I have currently fits with a more industrial/utilitarian theme but I am dying to find a space for a properly outfitted ladies writing desk type of thing with a set such as Sunny's too.

Id take it off your hands. They aren't available in Australia, looked everywhere

Here is my little desk fan that has seen a few posts, but why not one more!

Lamp and radio that has since been moved to various parts of the house.

My little stapler. It works great, but the top press was broken when shipped, so I JB Welded it back together and I need to still clean it up.

I've got a few tidbits around...

The skull is over a hundred years old. It's a cast iron inkwell from my maternal great-grandfather.

I use this little spike for pick-up slips for shoe repair or dry cleaning.

Vintage fan, Ronson cigarette lighter, Park Sherman brass cigarette box/dispenser, brass stamp dispenser with a little scale on it, my paternal grandfather's name plaque, my maternal grandfather's letter opener, and plenty of dust. The pen is usually in a base but it's out getting engraved.

Vintage In-Box and the obligatory old stapler - I LOVE these things! They work, and they KEEP working.

This lamp is solid brass including that big base. It is H - E - A - V - Y !!!

At least that keeps it from sliding across the desk when you pull on the tape!

^^true... but honestly, it must weigh 5 pounds or more.... I know they put sand in the modern plastic ones to weigh them down and they still slide. But if this slid, it would take the finish off your desk in the process...

Speaking of which, does anyone know if replacement press grips were ever made? I have a Swingline No. 3, and a Swingline No. 4 that were in my grandfather's desk, but both have lost their grips.

I just looked through this entire thread for some ideas...and now I've got a bunch! We're moving into a new house, a 1951 Cape Cod (just renting, but still!), and I get the whole top floor to myself for an office - and it's going to be vintage!

Just scored a vintage 1940s Royal typewriter - and it works! Had to put it on layaway since funds are a bit tight right now due to the move, but that baby will be sitting in my office by next month! I'll post a pic then.

Very cool! Can a person still find ribbons for those? I recently read about some shop in NYC that stays VERY busy doing service on only old typewriters, but there must be other shops like it here and there.

Also saw recently that some jewelry-maker is using the keys off old Royals and such to make rings! Quel horreur!!

wow, this thread brings back tons of memories. I may be in my thirties but
my parent were alot older and my dad was an ex college professor who had tons of old office equipment, mangled typewriters til the day he died etc.....
i still have several old bates wire staplers, reams of vintage paper i use in my laser printer,lamps, etc...... lol and i've been selling this stuff off piece by piece for years! and still have a bit left.
I love old stuff but i'm not sure how much i'd like a vintage office after having used this stuff all my life.
