MelancholicNostalgic -- I would have bought those two as well! I also found a 3-digit Hermes at a thrift a while back. Mine is 733. I think they date from the 1970s. Probably the only way I would ever buy one ...

Very nice! I have to agree with you though, after looking at the retail prices for a single tie there's countless other things that take a higher priority. That's part of the reason I love vintage ties, they are most agreeably affordable (while still maintaining high levels of quality most of the time!).

Would love to know the meaning of 'HAA'. Historic Airplane Association naturally presents itself, but I cannot find any matches.


Is there a specific name for this design? I'm a little fatigued at searching "vintage tie".
I get mixed results with 'tie with center graphic' and 'tie with center medallion'.

The HAA is most likely someone's initials; a monogram.

While I typically think of them too as 50's/60's skinny ties, the specific design on the tie is frequently referred to as a "motif," so perhaps that will help narrow your searches. I don't know what the name for the overall style type of the tie is though.
If you go through this thread you'll find a lot of excellent examples to stir your curiosity.
In addition, I just recently found a particularly nice one that's in excellent condition that I'll be posting soon.
I really like that last one you found (the blue/green one).

478 of them hear probably several more hundred in storage, plus another 250 into a quilt my lady is working on. Most of these are Brooks, funny all of them bought at thrift stores over the years all the time I worked there I bought only 1 tie. I couldn't afford a full retailers price

Funny these are both the same tie. 1 is modern 1 in circa 1960's , early 60's, some reason the color isn't coming out closer with my camera phone. The vintage one is slightly different shade older fabric. But Brooks Brothers still offers this tie in there catalog. And there still made in Long Island City, NY. There's ties are last inhouse product they offer.

Yes it is. Alot of the ties Brooks Brothers offers in there catalogue are over 100 - 125 years old. There slimiest suit. The Fitzgerald. Actually was pulled from the archives about circa 1900-1905. With the skinny jean fad going on right now with hipsters I don't have the heart to tell them that they are definitely not the 1st

Another great stash in this collection are the skinny squared off ties of Ernst of San Francisco from the late 50's early 60's. I was in a thrift store in the East San Francisco bay area little town called Pittsburgh. In a non discript industrial area was this St Vincent de Paul and you would never find if you didn't know where it was. I found about 30-35 pristine condition Ernst ties and a few others. Must have been the guys whole collection. 50¢ a peice. To this day probably the greatest score I ever found

Yes I come across quite a few. But usually damaged. There's so much to choose from in the bay area. The vintage collector paradise is a city or area east of San Francisco in the towns of Stockton down threw Modesdo. There's several very large thrift stores and when I say several I mean 50-75 and I'm not exaggerating and the suit and ties in these shops are virtually untouched cause people in these community's just don't dress up. And at one time in the 50-60's though kinda rural by San Francisco standards the towns of Stockton and Modesdo were rather affluent. Being not to far from Sacramento. Business's, large farms, Stockton and Sacramento both have ports connected to the Pacific and the highway 99 corridor was a major route between so cal and nor cal. This includes the towns of Tracy, Mantica , Turlock, Merced, and Fresno

Had a hard day at work on Monday so my wife took me thrifting to lift my mood. It worked! Prices ranged from 50-cents to $2.00.
