Believe it or not.
This evening, I was given this unused Billiard pipe by one of my block neighbours (79), which know me since nearly 33 years and we of course talked about the pipe stuff and He simply has no use for it.
His wife, which died nearly ten years ago, had this pipe in her mixed gift shop, which she closed in 2008. The pipe was never sold, but He took it home and never threw it away!

I promptly shoveled my tobacco and the filter from the Vauen into this one, and gave it a try. Seemingly not bad!
And altogether, it's def. NOT a cheap made pipe! It's a solid A-B quality pipe, I would say.

A "Toscana", without any number. Let's see, if we find out about this.

Man, I always wanted an olive wood pipe.
It's from B-quality brand Jean Claude. This time, only ONE of the EIGHT olive wood pipes were made okay to me!

I think, it's not even oiled, seems totally pure to me, but surely sandblasted. Boy, I'm looking forward!

Excellent smoker! Just came back from it's "maiden voyage".

BUT, that doesn't wonder me much, because it's smokehole is generous drilled!

And for my very first smoking-a-pipe-in-session, I went the safe way and choose my easiest tobacco, the Holger Danske Golden Harmony and it was awesome.

Yesterday, I started my Meerschaum experience, with a small Lord pipe.
It's a B-quality brand similar to Jean Paul.

But this one smokes like heaven! The Meerschaum inlay adds a nice sweet-dry touch to the smoke. And the pipe itself acts totally uncomplicated!

Have a couple of meer-lined briars made in Germany in the 80's that I bought NOS on Etsy a few months back. Also B grade, but they look great and smoke really nice and dry.

My first pipe, a Capri brand from Italy. From what I've gathered from terminology gleaned from this thread among other sources,its a basket pipe picked up at a local cigar and beer lounge. Right or wrong I started with a cherry aromatic tobacco. Mostly because it reminded me of the WW2 vet neighbor I'd visit as a kid. He'd spin wonderful stories of his time in the First Infantry Division and his life in general. Always punctuating his tales with pipe in hand pointing at photos on the wall or painting images in my head with his pipe stem. Hoping to order a couple of Missouri Meerschaums soon to start a rotation. At this point I don't even know exactly what this style is called lol. Enjoying learning to "sip" at it and slow down! Received several compliments today on my cap and Key Imperial overalls with my pipe in my breast pocket. I sit here tonight sipping on a glass of Jack Daniels honey whiskey, learning to slow down and blow a few smoke rings,reminiscing. Here's to a good pipe and fond memories of Woodrow Counts, and his many stories to a curious little boy.

Nice memories. I’m what you could call a 4th generation pipe smoker. When I was growing up all the men in my bloodline alive at that time were pipe smokers. I have lots of good memories & stories that frequently come to mind from a good bowl of pipe tobacco.

The shape of your pipe is what is commonly called a pot. If the bowl was a bit taller it could be a billiard. The sandblast to the briar is called rusticating. The style of the stem or bit is called a saddle stem. They can be straight, slightly curved, or bent.

There may be some brand markings on the stummel. Nothing wrong with a basket or shop pipe. Enjoy!

Two very old Meerschaums. The case for the lower one has 1876 scribbled on - always suspect of that sort of thing but it is a three star. the eagle claw case has no markings inside. The tin has an 1897 award noted on it So obviously post that date.

Scored a couple estate pipes from Ebay. The longer one is marked "Westminister" and "made in London England, the other is marked "Pipe by Lee limited edition" Gave them both a good scrubbing with vodka inside, and on the stems. Although I don't know how to clean the oxidation off the Westminister's stem. Not bad for $10.50 I reckon.

Needs to be 100 proof to kill all the cooties. Everclear grain alcohol is 100 proof & you can buy small bottles usually at the drug store. Be sure to use several pipe cleaners soaked in EverClear to clean the airway in the stem. Oxyclean or a denture tablet soak overnight will kill the oxidation on the stem but will turn it white. You can then remove the white residue with a very fine abrasive like 0000 steel wool.

If the bowl has a thick nasty smelling cake on the inside walls thin it down but reaming with a reamer or pocket knife taking care not to go down to bare briar or gouge the briar.

I looked them up & the Pipe by Lee limited edition was distributed by Stewart-Allen Co in NY. Maker unknown. Probably wore off now but look closely at the stem near the tenon. Pipes (briar) were graded with one to five stars.

The Westminster is likely a John Redman or a Comoy factory second brand name. Of the two the Lee is the better made pipe.

I just can say one thing:

I got my two 320 (Etna & Stromboli) from Savinelli and these pipes are just TOP NOTCH, say what you want! Grab them and got pure joy.

They are from different sellers. I believe the horse is older, but how old I'm not sure. It has the older style 2 piece stem/tenon that screws straight into the stone. The wolf has a 2 piece stem as well, but a different shape tenon piece.
Not sure if I'll smoke them or just display them.
