Atticus, I will have six 1895's.

I have three originals, two of the new Winchesters, and one of the Brownings made back in the 80's. The latter three are all . 30/06 ctg. Of the originals, two are .30 US Army (30/40 Krag), and one in .35 WCF.

One must be careful with the originals in 30/06 as modern ammo is a bit high pressure for the action. Reloading down to 30/40 Krag pressures is generally a prudent idea!

Thanks! I read there was a huge contract to Russia sometime before WWI and those '95s were in 7.62x54...which, I guess, was the typical Mosin-Nagant round in the era. They were used in the war and, later, in the revolution. Definitely a rifle with an interesting history!

The balance of production of 1895's were for that Russian contract. More 95's were made in 7.62 x 54R than any other cartridge! I think Some even made it to Spain in '36. Finland too!

I remember when a kid that Hunters Lodge had barrels of em advertised in American Rifleman. I tele er some of the adds said "these rifles still have Trotsky's teeth marks on them!"

Renault that looks like a good find. I would not mind having one, but need another centerfire like another hole in the head. I have two 1895's both in .405, late model reproductions, one a standard grade the other the high grade, coin finish receiver with gold inlays. I only wanted one and the local dealer ordered both not knowing at the time if he could get any. To make a long story short, I was hooked. I put one of the Providence Tool reproduction Lyman #21 sight on the standard grade, and have been shooting it a fair amount, mostly with cast bullets.

My goal now is to find a clean Marlin 39a Mountie. I should have bought one years ago to go with the standard rifle my father bought me back in 1952.

Got to show off these...
My CMP M1 Garand. Made in 1955--- just like me!
My 870 home defense shotgun, and accessory, just to make the point! The shotgun was surplussed from the Alabama Bureau of corrections. Hasn't been shot much but sure has been handled a lot.
Finally, this is an old, $75 Glenfield .22 that for years sat around in a miserable old brown finish/paint that covered any grain details. One day not so long ago I figured whatEVER was under that had to look better than that dead brown finish. And so it DID! I couldn't believe my eyes when I took that top coat off! Now it not only shoots good, it looks great! (to me anyway) I added the little detail to the end of the forearm to spruce it up.

I got lucky tonight, my wallet not so much. I won an auction for the Marlin 39a Mountie I had been wanting. Got a clean one, 1957 vintage, so it's C&R and can be shipped directly to me. By the time the check gets to New England and the gun is shipped it will probably be a bit over two weeks before I see it.

I finally picked up my Springfield Armory Mil Spec 1911 A1 today. It came with two magazines, two sets of grips, a plastic belt holster thingie, a cleaning rod and a carrying case.

I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but it sure seems to be 100%, hard-core 1911. By that I mean it is a solid, no frills, all business, heavy, military firearm. It even smells like the military. Nothing about it reminds me of the slick and snobbish 1911s some conceal in their briefcases or under their Brooks Brothers suits. On the contrary, this pistol seems made to live in the wide open...more like a tradesman's claw hammer than a lawyer's gold fountain pen.

It's a bit stiff, yet. At least the safety lever, the slide release lever and the action are all stiff. I can't tell about the trigger 'cause I refuse to dry fire a weapon. Just a thing with me. It definitely isn't like the surplus 1911s I've handled that shoot nicely but continue to rattle for a minute after you fire them. At least not yet.

I need to pick up some inexpensive ammo and take it out to the pasture for a while before I take it to the range. I'll let y'all know how it does.

I dunno maybe crazy is a coarse word with too wide a boundaries. All I know for sure is I love hunting and shooting, but I see wayyyyy.... too much gun violence here in "urban" Anchorage, Alaska. Check out the phrase "Spenard Divorce", it's a real thing ya'll.

Texas is like that too. Actually, the whole USA is supposed to be like that but, some voters are less particular about their freedoms than others. Anyway, I do not want to start any political wrangles.
As my fellow Texan previously stated, with a CCL, you just plunk down your payment, fill out the paperwork (one page simple form) and you are on your way. W/out the ccl, you have to go through an "instant" background check. But, there's no special paperwork required just to be able to buy a gun.

In Illinois, you must apply for and receive a FOID card Firearm Owner Identification card before you can purchase or even handle a firearm or ammo. Then you have a 1 or 3 day waiting period. To get your CCL requires a 16 hour course and then another background check.
