Thought this jacket in 'The Master' was rather marvelous. A very imposing look.

The character isn't portrayed as some kind of dandy. The fact that a regular guy in the late 1940s could pick up a random jacket that would look like this makes me sick. :)

sick as in "I want it" or sick as in "Where are these jackets?!"

Great film went to see it in its 70mm Presentation which was really amazing.

The jackets he wheres were pretty outstanding and they where very period correct all down to the not-Ron L hubbard character wearing gabardine 4 patch pocket leisure/hollywood jackets like the real Ron L Hubbard would wear.

Sick as in, I wish you could just dress so well without much effort nowadays. :) Of course I'm biased though.
I agree with your observations, I really felt transported to the era watching that film.

Thought you'd enjoy these shots from the brilliant film The Red Shoes(1948).
I have included some casual outfits too. Hope you don't mind.
Suits dressed up and down, summer jackets, gratuitous cravat wearing ;) huge sunglasses:

Would this be a rubber coat?

I like this t-shirt with summer scarf outfit, though I find the scarf purely ornamental and therefore couldn't justify wearing it. [huh] never say never I suppose.

Those shots 'hit the nail on the head' as far as i am concerned. I am a big fan of the post-war fashions, and it's nice to see the casual look. Summer shirt with scarf looks great, although I would personally choose a cravat over a scarf. Scarves might be ok in the world of ballet dancers on the French riviera, but it might look a little fey on the streets of Croydon.

P.S. I don't find the scarf ornamental: the shirt is so plain that it needs to be livened up.

great film. thanks for the screenshots Metatron.

my favourite outfit is the first one of Marius Goring's when he visits Anton Walbrook (3rd and 4th down). interesting to see a beard like that in 2nd photo (but then they are supposed to be boho students).
i prefer the dingy London scenes at the start of the film. not so keen on the summer attire as it all goes a bit flouncy. i've been keeping a look out for one of those black vinyl raincoats ever since seeing the film.

note that Anton Walbrook and Marius Goring both have the same haircut; long and wavy on top and side and quickly tapered at the nape.

here's another of Marius Goring:

Ah the boho thing explains why the girl with the bearded chap has an almost 1960s look to her.
I think these pictures show the great individualism that could be found at a time which in many minds is associated mainly with sober-looking suits. Often here it is about how the suit is worn rather than the suit itself.
But this may have a lot to do with the fact that the characters are meant to be fairly well off and/or artistic.

Here's something a little recherchez that I thought would spark some interest here on the lounge. Found this whilst looking for something entirely different on oldpictures.net (fantastic resource). As far as I'm concerned, that frock suit is the bee's knees.

Could he be an ancestor of Willem Dafoe?

I found this picture on a tumblr blog with fleamarket finds. I guess 1930s and german.
I think the short peak lapels kinda look like the bookster sportcoat from Two Types, don't they? Just a little less belly perhaps.

Another cool picture from the same blog:

These are from a 1934 film 'Tiger Bay'.

Lots of rather nice lightweight summer suits:
