Nice article on shining shoes in the recent issue of Classic Style. Those of us who were in the military generally "look down" shortly after an introduction is made.
One of my standards is to also ensure that heels and toes don't look too worn. I use "the pencil test". That is I take a No.2 pencil and roll it up against the back of the heel. If the pencil can roll under the heel, then it is time to replace the heel. Similar test for the toe. I do use rubber taps for protection, which keeps the maintenance cost low, as opposed to getting a complete new heel or new sole (for the toe wear). I learned the pencil test in the US Army.
