Hi all,
one of my favorite jackets is the Schott 674, which is a sherpa lined cowhide jacket with a synthetic fur collar that was very popular in the 1970s and 80s.

I thought it would be nice to have a brand new jacket of that type made from quality materials, so I contacted Shaul at US Authentic to see if he would make me a copy of the 674, and he delivered.

This jacket is made from seal brown goatskin, has a mouton collar, thinsulate lined sleeves and a sewn in sheepskin lining. I also asked that underarm gussets be provided for freedom of movement.

I can not say enough good things about this jacket, the quality of materials and workmanship is excellent, it's extremely warm, and Shaul got the fit just right using my existing Schott jacket as a template.

The pictures show the new jacket, the old jacket, and me wearing the new jacket. I'd love to hear what people think.

Looks like Shaul did a great job on this one, congratulations! I have a G-1 from US Authentic and their goatskin is some of the thickest I have ever seen. Is that true of your jacket as well?

Great jacket, I have a US made LL Bean Flying Tigers, very similar. Im a fan of those civi 70s G1s with sheepskin lining as well.

Looks like it will be a warm jacket. Shaul nailed the fit. Congratulations.

I have an Aero and a LL Bean with that type of lining. They are warm. Will be wearing one today as it will snow most of the day.

Wow, that's excellent! Shaul does great work, and in goatskin, my fave!

I had that particular variety (*) of Schott 674. I bought it new on sale for $99 in 1983 and I wore the heck out of it through a half-dozen NYC winters:

(* The day I bought mine, there were four distinct choices hanging there, all variations of the same model. Besides the white pile lining and faux fur collar, it also came with a plain leather collar and quilted lining - and either version in brown or black.)

Do you think the quality of the leather is the same as Schott ?

Short answer is I would say the quality is similar, but the characteristics are different.

The Schott is cowhide, the new jacket is goatskin. I picked the goatskin because it's my understanding that it will last longer, and it was lighter than the alternative at US Authentic, which was horsehide.

The other thing I had to keep in mind is the weight. The sheepskin lining is heavier than the sherpa lining in the Schott jacket.

Nice picture, I wish I could find a new Schott for $99!

Thanks.

You know, to some of us who've been into leather jackets for a long time, it's the opposite effect: I think today's Schott jackets are just INSANELY overpriced for mass produced, off-the-rack garments. I understand why jackets from artisan makers like Good Wear and specialist makers like Eastman (etc.) are so expensive, but Schotts?!? Anyway, they've priced themselves out of my league.

This is true, I just Googled the price for a new 184 and it's $900. My new jacket was only slightly more than that and was a custom made jacket made with better materials.

So either I got a deal or Schott is making bank. The good thing is that there are so many Schotts out there I can still pick one up for $200 or so on the used market.
