I will be in SF next week and am wondering where the best place to find vintage fedoras is at. Any suggestions?
jazzncocktails said:I'm spending the weekend there myself and research suggests a stop at Cable Car Clothiers, a British men's shop in the Financial district. Any hats they have will be modern, not vintage (I'll make my stop at La Rosa first! ). Sounds like a cool place, if pricey, from what I've read online--but I'm staying not too far from there, so worth checking it out. I'll report back about the results of the visit.
Good to hear that those reviews are from philistines, Guttersnipe. Yes, Yelp was one of the sources that I found...seems as though I read about La Rosa on one or two additional sites, but can't recall what they were. Fantastic info--thanks for passing it on. I'll definitely find time to stop by this weekend.Guttersnipe said:When you say from what you've read online La Rosa is pricey I'm not sure if you are referring to their "yelp" reviews (they've got a few unflattering write-ups on there from some non-vintage philistines). But, by and large, there prices are actually pretty fair. The average price tag in the shop is high, but that's because they only carry the best. Usually if ask the fellow who manages the store if he can do better on a price, he often is willing to work with you.

Now, Cable Car Clothiers IS expensive, but they have an excellent selection of English styles and classic American Ivy League styles. Great stuff. I got lucky once and found one of their tweed blazers with classic 3/2 button roll. Church rummage sale for $5.
Good luck on your hunt and don't forget to show us your "catch".
I followed your link, Jazz, and checked out the hats they have on their web site and saw what appears to be the Christy's foldaway fedora, but for a lot more money:jazzncocktails said:I agree with Sefton--La Rosa has a great selection of vintage clothing. I visited on Saturday, and I was impressed with the great selection--and the fantastic marking and dating of suits, ties, shirts; they really know their stuff. Unfortunately, only one hat in my size in stock, and it wasn't what I was looking for. But fantastic selection and definitely worth checking out.
Cable Car Clothiers was fun to browse through, and the staff was incredibly attentive. The hats were obviously all modern, and mostly Stetsons and Dobbs, with some Borsalinos and others in for good measure. Big selection. I didn't walk out with anything, but I enjoyed browsing.
