Came across something I have never seen before. IT seems to be an automatic finish nailer that you feed nails into, then hit down with a hammer on part of the tool. Like a pneumatic one, but with you doing the hammering.

It is about foot long and seems to be bakelite or some other form of early brownish plastic.

Pics to follow.

Anyone ever seen or heard of one of these. Seems to be forties or so.

Yes. We sell them where I work. New ones, of course. But the company was founded in 1946, so I can be sure we sold them back then, too. The finish nailers and staplers have high-impact plastic bodies.

Mallet-driven nailers and staplers have been around for quite a while, and you have the option of pneumatic or manual - although how far back pneumatic goes, I can't be sure. One tip: If you buy it to use, never, ever strike it with a metal hammer; always use a rubber mallet.

Where are those pictures? [bad]

Finally got some pics. It seems like bakelite, but doesn't seem to smell like burn when I rub it, so maybe it is an early plastic. Looks like bakelite though.
