Seabiscuit documentary

Just watched, on the local PBS station, the American Experience documentary film on Seabiscuit, which was filled with clips from recently recorded interviews and archival footage from the late 1930s, mostly. Of course I was struck by the fine style displayed by just about everyone back then, especially their hats. It just reinforced this eerie sense that perhaps I was born three or four decades late.
I figured y'all could relate. And if you get the chance to see the documentary, do it. It's an hour well spent.

Thanks for the heads up! I wonder if it'll be coming on my PBS station anytime soon, I'll check out some listings. Thanks! I haven't even seen the Seabiscuit movie, I guess i'm a little behind. I just don't get why Spider Man has to ride on a horse when he has webs.

I think that we have that documentary on DVD. I haven't watched it yet, but I've been thinking about it lately.

Yes, it's a wonderful documentary. The Seabiscuit movie also has some great hats, including Jeff Bridges' hat which is, in fact, owned by our very own Art Fawcett

Seabiscuit Dcoumentary on PBS

:eusa_clap

Hi All!

The Seabiscuit documentary is an excellent production of a PBS series called the American Experience, if I recall correctly. It captures the feeling of the perceptions of the people in the specific time of the occurences. Lots of period and actual events footage. As a series the American Experience tends to be top notch in all of their productions.

So if the choice comes down to watching a derivative sitcom where dad is a complete boob, beautiful twenty somethings stressing over life in a reality show or a fear factor type maggot eating contest, then PBS certainly wins with these types of documentaries. I hope they make more American Experience episodes from the 20's, 30's and 40's! The hats! The suits! The style!

Lucky me! Here in Covina, I can get in open air reception, 3 PBS Stations: KCET (28)from LA, KOCE (50) from Huntinton Beach and KLCS (58) also From LA/ Which allows me to often a second chance to see something I missed on the other channels.

2 thumbs up from me!

Sincerely,

FAUX FEDORAS

Interesting sidebar. Unlike most period films of the past, Seabiscuit's wardrobe people utilized a great many cheap wool fedoras for crowd scenes. The stars' hats were authentic. Months back these same faux fedoras were all over ebay.

Seabiscuit had three levels of hats. The hats for the stars were called "Hero Hats" and were real fedoras.

The others were called 'Stunt Hats' and 'Atmosphere Hats'. Here's Baron's website describing the hats in the movie Seabiscuit...

they talk about a “sense of illusion”. Of course, with big crowd scenes, it would be unrealistic to have real fedoras on all of the extras.

The Stunt Hats went on people in crowds that were photographed up close. They still look pretty good...

The Atmosphere Hats were for far away crowd scenes, like at the racetrack.

By the way, here is a picture of the real Charles Howard and his fedora...
