Recently I came across double motorcycle jacket made by Lost World. The jacket is made from 5 oz moose skin. I don’t know what moose skin is like, but as far as the heaviness if the leather is concerned, it might be the heaviest leather jacket in market.

I have handled that jacket, it is great.
5oz Moose skin feels like thick deer basically, like a big thick sloppy blanket.
If Moose hide was still available i would have ordered one without even asking for the price, it feels that great.
(and i say that as someone who was not super impressed by the deer... Moose is on another level IMO)

I don't have the numbers at hand, but my heaviest jacket is probably the Lost Worlds J24 at around 3.6kg. Available in which sense?

What is your heaviest jacket ? I’m really inquisitive ! Is it available ?
Hi! I’m back again.Recently I visited Big Twin, who builds custom made leather garments.I asked them if they will build a leather jacket just like the Vanson Marauder Suzuki jacket out of their heaviest 5ounce vegetable tanned steerhide. The shop owner Sawada was willing to do this. I believe the jacket will be the heaviest jacket I own beside the Boss Double motorcycle jacket. I know it’s ridiculous and a waste of money to order a leather jacket which is arguably useless as I cannot wear it around. Heavy leather jackets are like toxic addictive drugs: you can’t get away with it. I started from Schott 184 bomber jacket. I wish I get back where I started.

5oz, that is serious! If the jacket is comnfortable and the weight well distributed, it should be more wearable than you think :)

What size are you btw?

woah 2mm straight up vegtan hide is serious thickness, around the cuff and lapel it might be 4mm total if not skived, I think it is wearable but would take a painful breaking in the first few days / weeks.

Hi. I’m the wierd heavy leather jacket freak living in Tokyo. I was astonished that the Yah Ta Hey Double motorcycle jacket was known to some men in the United States. The shop which used to sell Yah Ta Hey jackets are gone bankrupt for more than 10 years. I owe the shop owner Narusawa about 7000 dollars. He cheated me. Aside from that, the Yah Ta Hey coats well as jackets were excellent. It was far better than Langlitz for sure. I’m hoping for Narusawa to return to business. I’ll forget about the money he cheated me.

I posted a message about Big Twin, a leather jacket shop in Tokyo. I requested a bomber jacket built from their 5ounce vegetable tanned steerhide. Mr.Sawada, the shop owner declined my request with the reason that the leather is so stiff that it won’t work well with the knit at the end of the sleeve and the waist. Now, this is the problem with almost all the Japanese shop owners. They have their own philosophy and are really arrogant. They won’t listen to the buyer’s request. I really dislike this attitude. They might be right but it’s not their business. They think of themselves as a pro, but to me they are a bunch of idiots.

Different makers are more or less flexible I guess. You can litterally ask anything from Johnson leather for example but Aero will refuse to put a #10 zipper.
That being said, I am still curious to visit Big Twin, they have some interesting models :)

Does Aero make their jackets from crome tanned cowhide if I requested to do so? For me horse hide is somewhat too stiff.

Yes. They have Horse, Cow, and Goat in chrome and some in veg-tan as well. They also from time to time will do limited runs of Buffalo, Roo, Kudu. That’s very rare. But they always have horse, cow and goat in chrome.

Is bison leather as thick as steer hide?
Hides can be found in many different thicknesses. You can get horse in 4-5oz maybe more. You just need to find an animal with enough useable hide. Most hides are skived down. So bison can come very thin or very thick. Traditionally though you will find bison in thicker ounce weights. Depending on how it’s cut, tanned and finished will all make a difference. But normally in most cases you find that bison hide comes in thicker cuts but feels light and almost has a spongey feel to it. So it may be found in 5-7oz but won’t feel much if any heavier than 3oz horse or steer. And again feels spongey is the best way I can describe it. Bison if not skived off or tanned away also will come with much more pronounced grain to it. I’m giving you the basics of how it normally comes. So to my one point I can’t stress this enough how it’s cut, tanned and finished can make everything I said false. You can find it in many different varieties if you wanted to.

Both hides can come too thick to be made in leather jackets, so I don't think this matters much. But as far as I know, bison is generally softer and very comfortable. I have yet to get a bison jacket, so can't talk from personal experience yet.

Edit: typos

Big Twin in Sibuya, Tokyo built me a jacket which is actually a copy of the Vanson Marauder jacket.I sent them the Marauder jacket which I own and requested them to build a copy, except that the leather is their vegetable tanned cowhide and the zipper is YKK. The Big Twin Marauder is made from their specific 5.5 ounce cowhide and is about 2 times as heavy as the original Vanson Marauder. Miss Takahashi, the woman who is in charge of leather jackets was quite concerned about the heaviness of the jacket and told me over and over again that I must be a Hercules to wear it around and I had to convince her that owning a heavy leather jacket is my only hobby and I am aware of what I’m doing. I wish I could upload a photo of the jacket but I can’t because I’m away from home for 2 month on business.

Just take pics when you come back :)

I find that the pattern makes a big difference on how you feel the weight, if most of it is carried by the shoulders, it is comfortable
