For the century beginning in the mid 1700's half a million Scots and Scots/Irish poured through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky and Tennessee. During that same time just as many washed down through western New York and Pennsylvania and flowed down the Ohio and spread into what is now Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri. From there, their descendants went west and north. Felling trees, pulling stumps, laying track, digging mines, building cities, making America.

WE made America. WE settled it. WE built it from nothing. WE formed its culture. It's ours. Jazz. Blues. Pfttt! All just pale imitations of what someone heard our ancestors singing. It's ours.

The Jarrells were lowland Scots. That's us. Highland scots just ran around in the woods in their skirts.

There's a great book about the Scots-Irish by James G. Leyburn. Love the music. Most of my paternal ancestors were of the Appalachian branches.

Thanks. I'll look it up. You might try the book "Born Fighting" by Jim Webb. Changed my life. For the first time I understood why I am the way I am.

I like the train in the background and the dog roaming around. The banjo player with the suspenders has a nice old fedora. This is the way this music was meant to be played! The bass player can shake it.

Great pics!
All this interests me. I'm not a hunter but I like old guns, and have some just for decoration. I enjoy the basic mountain/Appalachian type music, and it's descendant Bluegrass, plus Texas Swing. I love dogs, have a Redbone Coonhound (he's a big baby).

My dad's people came from Georgia, Southern Virginia and North Carolina, migrated to Florida in the early 20th Century. This stuff must be in the blood!

By the way, if you like traditional music, you would enjoy the soundtrack from Winter's Bone. I've never heard of the performers, but they do a great job of re-creating the impromptu jams
you might see in the mountain hollers.
