When horse riding a chin strap is a VERY usefull feature. Losing your hat from horeseback is even more of a hassle than walking about.
This changes from usefull to risky when you change riding over the Texan plains for going through woody country as the strap can choke you when a branch hooks the hat. The solution is to wear the strap in your neck attached to the collar. I used a metal ´S´ from a plastic cheap key fob hooked to the eyelet in the collar.
Later someone pointed out to me that this was something he knew from his youth.
Indeed do some vintage hats have a safety tie; a small button closing a loop under the hatband which can be opened to attach to a button in the collar of your skirt/coat.
I can however not find ANY info on this on the web.
Can someone tell me more about the origins or point me to a link?
