"Rosa Parks, the Alabama seamstress whose simple act of defiance on a segregated Montgomery, Ala., bus in 1955 stirred the nonviolent protests of the modern civil rights movement and catapulted an unknown minister named Martin Luther King Jr. to international prominence, died yesterday of natural causes at her home in Detroit. She was 92."

I work in a public school and used to be a Social Studies teacher. I haven't heard any mention of this so far. Sad.

What a debt we owe her, who have worked in the struggle for civil rights for all Americans, for women, for gays, for all people of color, for we in labor unions -- she is the modest, unassuming woman who stood up by sitting down on that bus 50 years ago, and taught us the way.
