I recently bought a 6X Western hat by Resistol for about $300. Today I found a website, in the title, who are showing a 1000X Western hat for only $61. How can this be? Anyone have any experience with this vendor?

X's are a marketing "gimmick" and have virtually no connection to or correlation with the beaver fur content of the felt. I've seen 1 Million X straw hats with, obviously, no beaver whatsoever! While it has become common these days for reputable hatters to offer 100X hats as 100% beaver, any other X designation is questionable (and to many companies, i.e., Stetson, the fur blend of their felts are a protected trade secret). Also, X designations (and beaver content) have changed over time. It is a safe bet that a 1950's Stetson 3X has considerably more beaver content than your recent 6X purchase or the 1000X hat you found online. Generally speaking, pre WW Ii hats have no X designation at all.

The short answer is that X's are meaningless. When purchasing a hat, you want to look at the quality of construction and the finish of the felt...almost impossible to determine when buying from generic, online retailers.

Thank you. Yes, it's a shame that there's no industry standard for this. This website says it's beaver fur felt, 1000X, but the price is so low it's hard to believe.
