Hi all...this is a "spur" from the Hats on an airplane topic. I was in Cost Plus World Market today in So Cal and saw small leather suitcases just right for a hat. They were wood inside, leather outside...and look like they stepped out of the 40's.

With a carboard insert they would make creat hat boxes/travel cases and only run $25. Their web site does not have them.

Good hunting!

A box made today from wood would probably get destroyed on a plane . There are many boxes out there in hat catalogs made from fibreglass or plastic that will do a great job.
Someone gave me a leather hat box that they bought from the "Bombay Company" in NY . Knowing that I was in the hat business, they thought I could use it for travel purposes. It looks great , but it wouln't last ten minutes on a plane .:cool2:

Too bad, I still remember the Samsonite Luggage commercial with the Gorilla slamming the case around in his cage.

Also I recall reading a captain on an airliner announced the conditions at the city they just landed in and finished with:

"i just received a report that the machine tha breaks the handles off the luggage is broken, we will have to do it by hand, so there may be a delay with your luggage."

I agree fully, these cases would not work for check-in But would be fine for carryon, or even as a home hat box. The reason I mentioned them is the retro look, while I agree that the dyno fiberglass model would stand up to check-in abuse, it is far from "Golden Era" in looks. :)

I appreciate the tip, Magus. I'll check out the local Cost Plus and see if they got 'em. For leisure travel here in the West, I much prefer going by Ford Windstar. That way I can see some new (and familiar) sights and tote a bunch of stuff I'd rather not be without, such as the 1950s-vintage portable cocktail kit (our most-prized wedding gift), attire appropriate to any situation we may stumble into, and a coupla-three or four hats. A leather-covered hat case (or two or three) sounds like just the ticket.
