Relaxing Music

It's been a long day at work, and you need some time to relax. There isn't much on television and you read the newspaper that morning, and just finished that novel. You're next option of relaxation? Music. Music in one of the many things that can change your mood depending on it. There's nothing like listening to the classical elements of Mozart or the light jazz of Ella Fitzgerald. At the moment I am listening to some very sooning piano by George Winston. His solo notes transcent your mood into a dream. He's a definite relaxer. Or how about the sweet notes of flamenco? Ottmar Liebert is amazing. His choice of melodies make you feel as if you're flying over the ocean, across the desert plains, and diving into unknown territory. If you like spanish guitar, he's your ticket to relaxation.

What do you listen to for relaxation? Would you reccomend it and why?

Wow. Another Ottmar Liebert fan. :)
I admit it's been a long hard day and I haven't fully read your post yet, but I will. That has never stopped me from replying...
Eydie Gorme. If it's good enough for Travis McGee, it's good enough for me.
Tony Bennett.
Myra Hess playing Brahms.
Only the Lonely by The Four Tops. Story of my life, and some good guitar and vocals.

To me, nothing can beat the relaxed delivery of the one and only Dean Martin. His time a Capitol produced his best work, IMO, but he was great to the last!

For some smooth Dino Classics, check out "Dino Italian Love Songs", or his greatest LP/CD while recording for Frank Sinatra's Reprise Label, "Dream With Dean"......Superb on all counts!!!

Old "Red Eyes" could sure deliver!!!

So true. I love Dean. There was a song in a Matt Helm movie that advised us to Relax Relax Relax Relax. I agree.
I like to relax in the Barcelona or Butterfly with a little Nat Cole sings, George Shearing plays.
Or Astrid Gilberto.
Or the soundtrack from A Man and a Woman.
Or Bouncing Off the Satellites by The B-52s.
So soothing.

For relaxation, I listen to Antonio Carlos Jobim. His music from the days of bossa nova comes from Rio of blue waters and bluer skies, of black coffee and green growing things, of Sugarloaf Mountain and Ipanema. His music says it all ... a pleasurable leisure, a place without pressures.

I own a 4 CD set from 'Reader's Digest Music', Martinis at Midnight.

Whether relaxing alone or with a gathering of friends, this is music with a 'mellow twist'. There are over 4 hours of romantic ballads and smooth late-night jazz, all performed by great singers and instrumentalists.

Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Mel Torm?©, Julie London, Johnny Hartman, Astrud Gilberto, Chris Connor, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Chet Baker, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, and the list goes on and on. A truly amazing set!

As a musician, it's hard for me to relax by listening to music. That said, there are certain artists I really love only after dark. Sarah Vaughn is probably the most notable- try her "Rodgers and Hart Songbook". And you can't go wrong with Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue".

After that it's Jackie Gleason--yes, that Jackie Gleason. As a band leader he put out many LPs meant to be paired with a cocktail, smoke and a special someone. On the classical side, Faure's Pavanne or Debussy's Fetes are things I never get tired of.

Cool, Chris Murray came to my hometown in Ontario for a ska show put on by some of my friends at a local venue a couple years ago, and left quite an impression on me.

I like Brian Eno to relax (and to party, and to listen to in every state in between!). Not just his ambient music, songs like "I'll Come Running" and "St Elmo's Fire" from Another Green World, "No One Receiving" from Before and After Science, and a lot of what he does with David Byrne I find to be extremely relaxing without being boring.

Theatre organ music. Gaylord Carter, Lew White, Jesse Crawford, Reginald Foort, Ann Leaf, folks like that, playing classic pop tunes on Mighty Wurlitzers. Big fan of "Pipe Dreams" on NPR, but they play too many church organs and not enough of the theatre variety.

I love them! He puts on a thing called the Bluebeat Lounge at the Knitting Factory where he and guest bands play a show every Wenesday night- it's awesome!
