So I have this suit, which I love. The jacket and vest fit adequately.

The pants are correct in length and have the right waist. However, the pants are too tight around the crotch and midsection. Is there a way a tailor can loosen up this part of the pants? Can the crotch be lowered so that I can wear the pants higher up on the waist?

Since this is a vintage suit, I wouldn't know how to match the fabric any other way. And if it is possible, how big a job would it be?

Yes, check the interior backseam and see how much fabric allowance you have. I sometimes need this done as my backside tends to be more fully proportioned. ;)

I doubt you could have the rise lengthened.

Hmm. It is even a little tight around the thighs, too. I don't know why the suit could fit everywhere else right and have this issue. It was my dad's suit afterall. But I guess maybe the 70s were like that.

But it seems as if your answers suggest it is worth a trip to the tailors regardless.

70s slacks were cut very sparingly. I personally find them to be too snug around the thighs and seat. That being said, I have had tailors tell me that,if the hem of the inseam has siufficient fabric, the seat & rise can be enlarged. Sometime a seemingly tiny alteration can make all the difference.
