I was wondering what you would use to remove the factory stiffener from the Stetson line. Any suggestions? thanks ahead of time. Fedora

Hi Fedoralover, Believe it or not, alcohol. In a Stetson western get your wallet out as it takes a tub full. and soak the hat. When I work on them I spray it liberally and try to wipe the stiffener out, to no great success I might add. It usually takes several soakings to make them pliable again.
Hope this helps

Art I have not asked you, but would Naptha remove it as well?

Also...is there any truth to the fact that you can get away with using a lesser quality felt when stiffner is applied heavily by the manufacturer or the hatter? If you remove the stiff stuff, you may end up with a floppy piece of ****!!

PS Are we on for lunch this week? Is it my turn ? PM , email or cell me Sunday

Art, fedora and fedoralover are two different folks. Although we are kindred spirits in many ways. But fedora is a lot better looking than I am.

OOPS...Sorry Fedora..( the good looking one) . I guess you are on my mind fedoralover...must be the alcohol fumes..
AndyKev, no, Naptha won't remove the stiffner as quickly as alcohol. And you are right, you can make a lesser quality felt behave with ALOT of stiffner. Can also drive nails with it in a pinch.) And, Yes, we are on this week. Your treat!!

Uh, what type of alcohol? Isopropyl, or denatured ? I figure the denatured, but thought I would check before I made a journey to Lowes. Fedoralover isn't a bad looking fellow. His wife is just so pretty that it makes him look bad.LOL regards, Fedora

Fedora, my first reaction was "Crown Royal", but then I came to my senses and denatured is what you want.

It would take a good fair amount of Windsor or Black Velvet for me to even consider attempting such madness.
