Hey
Bought a felt fedora second hand--and then during the summer it stayed on a pin up on the wall for months. I'm sure in that time on the wall it probably got dusty/dirty/things might've crawled on it...What should I do to clean it and make it fit for wearing?

lol lol You kill me, Wil.

FedoraFan112390; Do you have a proper hat brush? They are sold at western stores usually or can be obtained online. Horsehair, I think and curved to facilitate working around the brim. When looking down on the hat, brush counterclockwise as there is actually a direction to the grain of the felt. There are also rough orange sponges (I've heard of other ones than the orange but I have not used them) which are designed for use as hat brushes. Stay away from stiff stuff like whisk brooms, angle grinders, wood chippers, etc. Oh, oh, now I'm starting to sound tipsy and that's impossible.

Another thing I learned here on TFL for used hats, if you're huzzy about potential cooties, is to place the hat in your freezer overnight to kill off any additional FedoraFans with whom you may not want to share the hat.

G'luck!

I happen to use a Kiwi brand horsehair shoe brush. They're sold in most chain drugstores for about 6 dollars. They're not marvels of craftsmanship, but they do have a nice thick head of soft but springy horsehair.

Some dealers in antique rugs routinely freeze rugs to remove insects and eggs before sale. While many secretly doubt that home freezing is effective against certain spores and microbes, it is rumored that at least one lounger actually uses an autoclave to sterilize hats. ;)

If you are afraid that bugs got into your lid, put it in a bag and then in the freezer.

Brush your hat with a horse hair brush counter clock wise for dust.

Next part is very important: Slap it on your head, take a nice walk;) :eusa_clap
