Puzzled by my 40's jacket

I have this original 40's jacket which is a great fit on me and fast becoming a favourite item of mine, I am not strong on the 40's styles!

I not sure how or what to wear it with in a true 40's way.

I have tried it with a couple of black skirts just below the knee and the other just on the knee both slightly flared, which looks ok to me.

I not sure about a blouse, should it be worn inside or outside the skirt ?
plain or paterned, maybe pink flowers ?
or should I go for a dress?

Help / ideas are more than welcome.

It was very common to wear jackets like that over a cotton day dress -- a solid-color jacket would work well over a print dress, as long as there was some echo of the color of the jacket in the dress or the print. I have quite a few "orphaned" suit jackets I put to use this way.

Another idea of the Era would be to look for a patterned skirt -- a plaid or a check-- which would work well with a solid jacket.

Thank you Lizzie, I like the dress idea the best,
This is a orphaned jacket I not sure if there as ever a skirt with mine you might explained why.

Lizzie's idea sounds lovely!

If you're going to wear it with a blouse, since the jacket is solid you can get away with any pattern. If the pattern has the jewel-tone purple in it, even better. I would tuck the blouse into your skirt, always; I haven't seen a well dressed Golden Era woman yet with her tails exposed :)

Good advice from the ladies. Perhaps start with a small, not so busy pattern, little flowers or polka dots would be good. A navy skirt and navy polka dot blouse might be cute. Or a tea dress with some purple like your jacket within its colours would be very nice.

It looks great on you though. Great colour on you and the skirts look great too.

I like the polka dots idea, navy sound interesting too I never really worn navy.
I have worn the jacket with a black shift dress and purple tights as a modern style and also with a short dark grey skirt.
( That what I been doing for the last few month re inventing my modern image but this it not really the palace to post modern looks even if they have a vintage eliment to them).
Now I wanted to try it as it was once worn. if I can.
