Size tags are such interesting and valuable artifacts in dating a vintage hat - they are also too often the weakest link. While the card weight Stetson labels from the forties and fifties seem to hold up pretty well, the delicate paper used on other brands can become very brittle with age and break off with the slightest touch.
After losing a couple, I've started to reinforce fragile paper labels to preserve them. Common transparent tape would be convenient, but these generally have acidic adhesive that yellows paper over time and would probably not be the best choice. I use a roll of linen tape from my stock of picture framing supplies. It's particularly well suited - a thin, strong gummed tape... acid free and removable, should that ever be necessary. I find applying a piece slightly smaller than the size tag to the back of the label works well.
Just a thought for the day!
