I don’t see anything myself that definitely puts it in the 1940s, but it could well be. Family stories etc. generally cannot be trusted. I have many hats that family assured me “grandpa” was wearin in his wedding photo in 1946 when I can tell definitively that the hat was made in the 1960s.

Occasionally, we do see some date stamped hats which really help. Without certain and verifiable provenance or date stamps, all we can do is speculate on a date range. OPA and OPS and NRA markings are wonderful, but they are the exceptions. Dating hats is usually an imprecise science and it’s far more common for sellers to state their hats are older than they actually are then it is for them to claim they are newer than they are.

In the end, it probably doesn’t matter what the exact age of a hat is, or even which decade it was made it. A hat made the last day of 1949 or the first day of 1950 will be equally wonderful!

My new aquisition just came in the mail today. I picked this up for a song from a lady on the internet and it's absolutely a beauty.
It was her father in laws hat that he had since new. Not sure, but I believe he may have hardly ever wore it or never at all. The color is a beautiful blue shade. Even came with the original box but that was pretty trashed to say the least. In the box was a wrapped Muriel cigar and a plastic rain cover with the original paper work for the cover. Hard to find size 7 3/8. Hope I'm posting pics of this in the correct forum. Despite it being a punti size 6, it fits. Guess that elastic tie helps

Thank you, Randy! I'm very pleased with it. I have another one on the way that I scored for lots cheaper and it will be sent to @Randall Renshaw for a little work.

I only have one other Sovereign Twenty to compare it to and it's an OR. The hand of this Stetson Twenty ME is much nicer. The felt of this one feels significantly thicker but still very soft. It'll make a great cool/cold weather lid.

That’s a great old school crease on there, looks beautiful. I have one of these in gray but it’s pretty beat up and the sweatband has been replaced. But I love the tall crown and soft felt. As classic as it gets. Enjoy!

I'm going to reply to my own comment in order to make a correction. I took out my Stetson Twenty OR and it's every bit as nice as the ME. It had been a while since I handled it. Both felts are magnificent.

I agree with Randy. MEs are Some of Stetsons best vintage offerings with an excellent felt finish.
