This finally arrived from North America yesterday - I would almost rather not sleep than take it off. I haven’t felt this way about a material possession in almost 20 years.

I have one in a light tan color.... I agree about the felt. Quite a bit nicer than the non-de luxe version. I need another one!

Long story short. OK, maybe not so short.

I'm in California on business, and even before the trip I Googled hat shops near my destination (I have none near where I live). A surprise early end to the work day today, and the recent rain had given way to California sunshine, so I hopped in my rental car and drove to Santa Rose to visit Portobello Hats. No, they don't have a website (yet), so I can't provide a link.

I was greeted by two lovely and friendly ladies, Heather and Theresa, who remarked on my Flechet ("that hat shows you know about hats!"). I confessed that I had only started wearing and collecting, but that I had been researching, and I have a slew of experts to help me!

One thing led to another, and I mentioned I was interested in a Homburg for a black tie dinner I attend every year. I tried on several, but I didn't like how they looked on me. We talked about the "hierarchy" of formality in men's hats, and I mentioned that the Bowler had been a quite formal hat in England. Next thing you know, I had on a Bowler. And it fit perfectly! I hadn't planned on buying a hat, and Portobello doesn't even ship, so I nearly walked. But you know, the hat just fit so well and I liked how it looked on me, that I pulled out the plastic and walked out with it.

I'm going to ship it home, as I can't take it aboard the plane and I'm certainly not going to stow it.

So, some really poor photos in my hotel room of my latest acquisition. It's made by Michael Zechbauer Style for Men by Mayser, a German hatmaker since 1800. I know nothing of the brand -- why should I? I'm still new at this -- but the hat looks and feels great. The fit is superb, even though it's labeled 57, and I'm closer to a 58.

Congratulations Fred. Looks like a nice crown height. Interesting brim curl too. I like it. There are a couple of threads with this brand floating around. Have a great time in the sunshine state.

Thanks, Mike. I'm beginning to find my way among this maze of terms and concepts. I'm actually quite amazed at the number of compliments I get about my hats. Just today, as I was walking down the sidewalk, bowler in bag and Flechet on pate, a complete stranger gave me effusive compliments on the Flechet. He thought it was new, and when I informed him it was probably thirty years old, he was agog.

I received a second compliment later in the day. Astounding!
