I have one too and mine reads smaller than the true size. On soft hats the difference is small, but on stiff hats the difference is considerably more. The longer the oval the less accurate it is too. I still find it useful and just know to compensate for the discrepancies.

Odd thing is that when circumference of a selected size is measured on the devise it's dead on the nose. There must be too much play in the guides.

I think I've inflicted enough abuse on this poor steed. I'll let it rest in peace.

One of those new Ultra Light Stratoliners.........It's ok I guess......especially after I re-blocked it and creased it the way I wanted. It has a nice heathered appearance but also a bit of the "Cat Slept ON it and IN it" look.

Not new to me "today" but it's almost my one year anniversary with my first custom hat, a This is Folklore hat from Portland. I can believe it took me so many years to learn there is a custom hat maker just a few blocks from my house. The hat fits like a glove and I can't wait for the weather to cool off enough to wear it again. Does it fit true to Stetson sizing? I thought that I read the sizing was slightly different. I like the packable concept.

This one is true to size......has cloth sweat which always feels differant.

EVERY packable fur felt I have (including this one) needs considerable steam and attention to turn back into a decent shape after unrolling them. While they ARE extreemly light they are rather delicate........you cannot take them off and shove them down the coat sleeve and then pull them out looking as before, as I have and can with the wool ones.

Now that I have reblocked this hat, I like the shape and color a LOT, BUT, It is trying to be a bit of a "long hair" with these white hairs sticking out all over. MUCH more evident than in the publicity photo's.......as I said initially.....on closer inspection it very much looks like the cat slept on it.....

I don’t think I could be there and watch someone approach my new custom hat with a gas torch. I’ll have nightmares for weeks.

You wear your hat well and you look like you’re living your best life.

Yes...it is a trade off....packable wool is heavier/bulkier (much thicker than most fur felt), but really holds it shape well (but then is next to impossible to reshape). And the packable fur felts are much thinner and lighter, CAN be re-shaped, but need to be treated with care, and not REALLY packable (need a LOT of attention when "unpacking").

{ALL the packable hats need a good dose of water repellent to ward off rain shrinkage. Does not hurt most all modern felts (packable or not) as they seem to neglect this part of the processing nowadays. "Back in the day" they were advertising their water proofing..........they seem to prefer to save the effort/money now.}

The JHS Crest is the similar to the "Loden" Soft Felts that also do not have Hückel on the Sweatband and Crown Tip Patch. The Paper Label is a JHS Soft Felts Post WWI Type 8 and has no mention of JHS. This hat came from a Czech source.

Those old velour hats are spectacular. It’s amazing how often you still find these 100 year old masterpieces.
