Alright, I can't be the only one who saw all the NOS Selco hats on eBay. They were listed as the seller's grandfather's stock from a defunct New York hat store. These were mostly Hückel / Tonak / Selentino. The one I bought was purported to be from the 1950s and was new in the box. As they had one in 7 5/8 I bit. Hey, I'm also supporting four Nigerian princes.

The hat arrived and it's a bit of a mystery. The brim is approximately 2 5/8" and it is indeed a new open crown hat. I don't normally go for black fedoras (Homburgs are a different story), but I kind of like this mystery hat.

Now because it's me, there must be some issue and indeed there is. This is a tight fitting 7 5/8 and now I have to decide if I should pass it on or if I can stretch it just a bit. I'm holding off on creasing it until I decide its fate.

If anyone out there knows anything about these hats I'd love to hear from you.

Nice looking lid. I dig the ribbon work.
If it's one size or under too small I'd go for the stretch.

Selco was (is -> Selentino) associated with Tonak and the logo is based on Hückel's but this doesn't look (felt, construction, components) like any of my late 1950s Tonaks.

http://germanaustrianhats.invisionzone.com/index.php?/topic/255-czech-hat-find-may-2016/?hl=tonak

I would also expect to see made in Czechoslovakia on it somewhere if made by Tonak. Here is a 1970s? Selco Hückel made by Tonak (not my hat) that is clearly marked as "Made in Czechoslovakia Especially for SELCO".

http://germanaustrianhats.invisionzone.com/index.php?/topic/6-johann-hückel´s-söhne-hückel-hutfabrik-weilheim/#entry162

Can you tell if it's Beaver fur? Tonak doesn't produce Beaver Felt only Rabbit and Hare based Felts.

My interest in Tonak is only up to the early 1950s when they still made near Hückel like Felt and Hats.

Besdor (Steven) if he sees this might be able to tell us more.

Thanks steve. I appreciate all your earlier help in trying to identify this hat.

As it previous told Steve @mayserwegener, the leather sweatband suffered from dry rot and crumbled upon inspection. I have already boxed up this hat and will send it off to VS for a new sweat and also a new ribbon in something other than black. I'll also ask Art to confirm that it is a beaver felt hat. The deteriorated sweat was a bummer as I wanted to retain all the stampings and markings. However, I bought the hat for the shape and style and I'm alright not knowing exactly what it is. Still, if anyone has information to share I'd love to know more.
