Nora-Hüte, measures about 57.5 cm, probably early 1950s late 1940s. The condition of this hat is near NOS condition. The darker gun metal gray Velour is really fantastic same with the hat form. The hat appears to be made by the same company that made my Stefan Esders "Velour" which also has no company mark and no paper label. Nora-Hüte appears to be the Vienna hat shop that it was made for but I couldn't find anything about them.

Black hats are a pain in the ass to brush ...sometimes the brush leaves more than it takes off

I’ve found that a black piece of felt works worlds better on black hats ...

I got the idea when I received an untouched 1930s Stetson Standard Quality that came with a piece of black felt made for this very purpose

Brushes work fine on black... felt works better

How do you maintain that felt?
If it's old Velour I usually vacuum first. You need to use a stiffer brush (bristle 1 to 2 inches) if the Velour is matted. In some cases you need to first brush + steam in the opposite direction of the nap and then with the nap. If the nap is worn there isn't anything you can do. I usually finish with a long (4 inch bristle) soft brush + steam with nap. For maintenance I usually just use the long soft brush + light steam with the nap. Modern Velour is not like most of the 1950s and older Austrian and German Velour Hats I post here. They were Hot Wet Brushed and had superior Hare fur content + production.

That's amazing. Thank you for the detailed explanation. It's the details that make a big difference.

Thanks for the tip. I find that almost anything in black is pretty painful up there.

I would recommend reading this article "Hair Velour / Real (Echter) Velour / Prime (Prima) Velour Fabrikation von Damen- und Herren- Filzhüten, Der Deustchen Hutmacher Zeitung (1933)" from my website (see link below). The English translation from German is very good. It will give you idea what Real (Echter) / Prima Velour is and what we have today (no longer Hot Wet Brushed + suspect fur content). The best way to work on Velour is to have a Touring machine which would spin the hat. The Touring machine is mentioned in the article (make sure to check the external links in the article). I have a lot of German and Austrian vintage (pre WWII) Hat Industry information on my site that should be interesting to hat makers (at least IMO). If you have questions you can send me a PM.

Thank you! Was looking to get to know more about velour. This is perfect. Wish my German was up to date, translation works fine. Happy New year!
